if these suggestions don't help then the machine needs to be checked for a timing problem Skipped stitches
1. The needle is not inserted correctly
Remove needle & reinsert needle( flat side towards the back of machine)
2. The needle is damaged
replace with new needle
3. The wrong size needle is being used
Choose a needle to suit the thread & fabric
4. The foot not attached correctly
Check & attach correctly
The needle thread breaks
1. the needle thread is not threaded properly
2. The needle thread tension is to tight
3. The needle is bent or blunt
4. The needle is incorrectly inserted
5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew
6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing
7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle
the feeder bar, do you mean the feeddogs, that are in the needle plate?
try rethreading the machine top & bobbin make sure the bobbin is threaded correctly & inserted into the bobbin case correctly change the needle
Correct needle insertion is mandatory for proper use of your sewing machine.
Raise the needle bar to the highest point, then loosen the needle clamp screw to remove the old needle.
Place the new needle in the needle clamp with the flat side of the needle facing the back, (round needle, the groove in the needle should face away from the shaft).
Push the needle all the way up as far as it will go. Then tighten the needle clamp screw.
if these suggestions don't help,, then the machine may need to have the timing checked at a sewing machine shop
Plate on bottom:
Remove screws. Keep screws in safe place and oil moving parts with good quality sewing machine oil. Zoom with spout for sewing machines & servers is what I use purchased online...lubricate gears with Singer lubricant (in tube). Tip machine back onto a towel to remove screws. Just one drop oil on moving parts & dot of lube gear only if not showing signs of grease already. Please remove bobbin and presser foot before cleaning/oiling. One drop oil then generously SMEAR oil on oscillating hook,
open right front door & one drop top of needle bar.
Clean out race shuttle for lint, fuzz balls, broken threads with soft sewing machine brush & clean your feed dogs gently with bristles too.
Hope this helps. Do not clean machine near children or curious pets! I run my machine with pedal on table top so I don't accidentally step on it. Control with right hand to see moving parts. At your own risk, of course. Safe and effective but only if you are extremely careful. Replace all screws securely. Put in new needle all the way UP into needle bar groove, presser foot UP turning handwheel towards you, flat end of needle to back,
Thread Front to Back of needle.. Keeping presser foot raised @ highest position ensures thread locates the tension slots properly.

First you need to find out if your machine is a high shank or low shank type. Some are slant types and to simplify what I mean: the foot attachments fit on the bottom of the needle bar. You can get a snap-on foot adapter from a sew and vac store like www.kenssewing.com and then you can purchase feet for many stitch patterns: blind hem, buttonhole, zipper, cording, sequins & pearls, standard straight stitch, zig zag ( if your machine has that capability because I don't know if yours is a true vintage or newer). I suggest you get a manual, if possible. homeappliance.manualsonline.com may have one for that model. Welcome to the world of sewing! I suggest you get a manual so you can get to know the parts/functions of your machine. You will need bobbins, good quality thread, needles of various sizes depending on the fabrics you are interested in sewing. The public library has wonderful books on sewing. I suggest you get a diagram of a basic sewing machine that names the parts. You can definitely get the attachments! Check out eBay too--I get all of my sewing foot attachments there since all of the sew & vacs in my area have closed shop.
Happy sewing!
I hope I was of some help today.

Put just one drop of good quality sewing machine oil on moving parts. You can set machine back gently on towel. Remove bottom plate by removing each screw. Set each screw in a bowl so they don't roll anywhere. I have 30 years experience, so I personally run my machines when oiling so I can observe the parts that move. I d on't recommend this if you have pets & children, and leave that up to you!
You should probably unplug machine and just look for anything that is NOT a gear, and just put one drop oil on those parts. Singer lubricant should go on actual gears, but ONLY if not already "greasy". Reassemble bottom plate. If your machine left front section opens up, one drop on those moving parts, and smear one drop of oil on hook. One drop top of needle bar. Do NOT oil or lube plastic parts. Never use cooking oil or bath oil; it will coagulate & damage machine. Always run machine with a scrap of fabric for a bit to distribute oil and to make sure excess does not get on your good fabric. Then rethread machine and replace bobbin and put fresh needle in. Yes, removed thread, bobbin, and needle BEFORE you lube & oil.
Did this help?
Best of days and nights sewing,
Jimmy
my suggestion is that the machine needs to be serviced at a sewing machine shop, because for 1.it's not responding 2. it used & you don't know when the last time it was serviced 3.something is wrong with the machine. hopefully there are no broken parts, but having the machine serviced will tell that. as for a manual
Go to the singer website
Go to the home page
Go to customer service--click on it--it will show a small menu--click on instruction manual
In the box put the model number (example w510 ) & click search
here's something to check is the needle inserted all the way in to the needle holder? needle--flat side goes to the back of the machine is the needle clamp screw tight or loose? if the needle is correctly in the needle holder & the needle clamp screw is tight --then the needle bar is out of time & need to be serviced IF YOU DO HAVE TO TAKE IT TO BE SERVICED AFTER YOU GET IT HOME STOP RIGHT THEN & SEW ON THE MACHINE TO MAKE SURE THEY FIXED THE MACHINE & IT SEWS LIKE IT SUPPOSE TO, I HAD ONE CUSTOMER THAT TOOK THEIR MACHINE TO A SHOP & THEY CLEANED IT AGAIN & DIDN'T FIX IT BUT CHARGED THEM FOR IT & THEY BROUGHT IT TO ME TO FIX & IT HAD TO BE RETIME did you get a instruction manual for the machine if not check at singer Go to the singer website
Click on customer support--there will be a drop down menu
Choose instruction manual
In the box type the model number---2009
Click search--if you don't see a manual--contact singer customer service
read the manual and go through the needle threading and bobbin winding procedure step by step as if you were a novice. I believe the bobbin is ether wound or installed backwards.
