I took the washer apart and while putting it back together realized that I need to know which or 2 or 3 connectors goes where for the control panel

Suggestion: Plug off the wall first. Check to see if all the connections are firmly pushed in; during the job some could hv come loose. Check the wall outlet, your washer plug....whatever. Then plug in.
SOURCE: softener
that cap has a rubber o-ring at the edge. it covers the nut so that no liquid would be spilling on the metal nut . just slowly press the cap downwards the inside of the agitator and press it firmly then put back the softener container on top.

SOURCE: lid switch assembly
go to www.searspartsdirect.com for a picture of this units lid switch.it doesnt show it very well, but it will give you an idea of how it goes back together.
what you need to do is put the lever around the switch first, then put the plastic box on the switch and arm. then carefully hold the assembly together and try to get it under the top and put the 2 screws back into the housing holes.
it sounds simple but i have done this before and its not easy. you just need to be careful to get the screws into the mounts correctly or it wont hold together to allow the switch to activate when the lid is closed.
by the way was there a reason you took the switch off??
maybe because it wont spin?
by the way this unit is not 30 years old, maybe 20 at the most.
the drive couplings are a weak spot for these and you may have a broken one. it wont spin or agitate but will drain if this is broken.
SOURCE: need to know how the control panel goes back on
This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action
Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.
Your model number will likely start with 110. and then a series of numbers.
A page will come up with a list of sub-components.
Click on the control panel section and you should get an idea of how it mounts.
Another good site is the Whirlpool installation and maintenance PDF for top load washers.

yes the water inlet valve is bad! might be easier to remove the base, when you remove the base the back stays connected to the frame. just unplug the machine, remove the end caps on your control panel and remove the screws holding it on, them pull slightly forward and up to fllip the control panel back it has plastic hinges on top,be careful not to break them. then unplug your lid switch, with a screwdriver remove the 2 gold clips that hold the base to the back panel, then open your lid lift from back towards you and the whole base will come off leaving the back panel and frame, should be a whole lot easier to replace the valve, then replace reversing your steps , when you are lifting off the base look at the bottom of machine through your lid and you can see how to put it back on the frame! not to hard!
