Holy **** suggestion 4 worked. Top right side near the menu button - a little whack with the middle finger knuckle, and you can actually hear the hard drive spin up. I still like this player - 30GB for heaven's sake !!! and any iPod that comes into this house goes to my kids anyway. Might be time to make a backup of all the music though....
My player was working and suddenly stopped. I rebooted the player and
it gave me 4 options; 1. Clean Up 2. Format All 3. Reload OS 4. Reboot. I tried solution 4 and it worked . So relieved as I have a lot of music on it ! Thank you so much !

Try all 4, one at a time until you get the one that works.
Uninstall everything from your PC, reboot, reinstall driver and the Explorer (I do not use MediaSource, only the Explorer).
If it didn't work out follow these steps:
1. Uninstall Creative Media Source and all related software. 2. Install the driver. In the installation CD the driver is usually in \Drivers\English 3. Turn on the Nomad an connect it to the PC. 4. Install MediaSource(the program requires that you have the nomad connected while installing) 5. Install MediaSource plugin 6. Try transferring files.
you?re still running into problem know that there are other programs
capable of handling MediaSource?s functions, such as - Portable Audio
Devices Power Toy , NomadSync, Real player, and there?s also a Zen
plugin for the Winamp.

Detach your player from the PC if it is connected, and turn off the player.
If the player stops responding, you can reset the player. To reset the player, gently
insert a thin object into the Reset hole located below the power switch.
2. Press and hold the Play button while powering on your player.
3. When the player displays the Creative logo, release the Play button.
It will display the following options:
Scans the player and removes invalid links from its music library.
Does not affect music files themselves.
Caution! Erases all content!
Save a copy of your player's content before formatting.
Reload OS/ Firmware
Caution! Erases your player's firmware.
DO NOT select the Reload Firmware option unless you have access to a PC
and you have downloaded the necessary firmware to install.
Reboot Reboots the device.
you might want to verify that your new player has the latest firmware
available, as this might address the unresponsive-button issue you're
having. Firmware updates are surprisingly easy - you just download the
firmware file from Creative's website, plug in your player, and
double-click the downloaded file. It's that easy.

ZEN Micro and ZEN MicroPhoto
1. Make sure that the battery is charged.
2. Detach the ZEN Micro or MicroPhoto from the PC, and ensure that it is turned off.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Move and hold the Power button to the Power On position and re-insert the battery to the ZEN Micro or MicroPhoto. Hold the Power button until the Recovery Mode appears.
The following options will be displayed:

Reboot Reboots the device.
Sounds like it may be the index in your Music Library. Try going into Recovery Mode the routine way; remove battery(are they charged and good?), hold power switch to ON, replace battery, release power switch when the Recovery Mode screen appears on the screen. Run Option 1 CleanUP, after it completes run Option 4 Restart/Reboot. You will get a Rebuilding Library screen when it reboots, that's normal, then it should go back to your startup screen.
