I do not think moving the console while playing is the problem. It might scratch, of course, when you move while you're playing, but what when you're not and it keep scratching disks? Problem the people who have posted here, haven't been moving when playing. My PS2Slim is scratching my disks too. I have put a new unscratched disk onto it, and made it load the game, and just for few minutes I turn it off and take the disk out, I see a small scratch on near the outer side of the disk. And it is doing that constantly, on the same place, without moving the console. The console is not on vertical position, but horizontal.
I was reading somewhere that when the disk starts to spin it vibrates, which makes sense. If you lift your cover and check, there is a piece of small cloth like or sponge, I don't know near the top part, near where the disk lense is, it kind of like keeps the disk still. But from time to time of being using the PS2, that small thing gets worn out it could be probably that thing that is not working as it is supposed to be, so the disk starts to vibrate more than it use to and then the disk gets scratched. This is just an hypothesis. I still need to find a way to replace that small piece to see if that's the problem.
Update to my previous post.  I have replaced that small piece of spongelike material that kind of keep the spinning disk still or not to vibrate.  I have tested 2 and 3 games already, and it hasn't scratched them yet.  I will keep testing some other disks more and post the results here.
Regarding with what I have replaced that white spongelike thing, I used those double contact tapes that has a white piece of sponge in between. Â I used two of the same size and pasted on top of each other, and then put it on the place the original was (of course you'll need to take that off first, please if you do this, check if yours is worn out). Â Use a small scalpel to take the glue of the side that will make contact with the disk out and leave one side with glue so you can paste it there.
Update to my post. Â Last night I tested playing 2 more discs like for 30 minutes or more and haven't seen a scratch after I replaced the small piece of white spongy thing that kind of holds onto the disc's border. Â Seems like when that thing is been worn out, your discs vibrates more than usual and leading to the scratch of discs. Â At least, it had worked for me. Â I don't want to change the old one back to see if it starts scratching again. Â I'm keeping the worn out piece just in case I need it, I think it will be used as referrence. Â I can add some pictures if anyone requests so. Â Have a Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
ex gore..i face the same problem as yours..i would to know more about the solution and how to fix the spongelike thing..could you teach me?

Replacing the small peice of padding does seem to work, i took a more budget approach and made a new pad from a cotton pad and a slip of masking tape to keep the shape, then i simply super glued it (very carefully) over the old worn pad. I ran an old demo disk for ten minutes or so to let it wear a healthy groove into the new pad and when i removed it, no scratches! It seems that the superglue used gave it a firmer shape too which supports the disk better I would imagine. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO GLUE THE LITLLE PLASTIC PAD HOLDER INTO PLACE - IT IS SUPPOSED TO MOVE SLIGHTLY! Also, be careful not to make your pad too hard or thick, as that cant be good.
Your disks get scrached most probbably because you move your console when your PS2 is running and there is a disk in the disk tray. Always turn off you console when moving it around.
I have bought my new ps2 but my problem is that it cant read any memory card that im inserting on it... it can work perfectly but my only problem is that it cant read any memory card, plz...help me guys....
Wow, just found this, and I must say, as my PS2 slim has been "out of order" for almost a year now, your solution exGore, was awesome! Thank you so much! Time to go play some Socom!
First of all the new laser lens will not allow your Slim to read NTSC UC games if you have a PAL european Console.
There is no reason the New laser should have not read the disc unless it Came to you damaged. It sounds like you know how to replace a laser.

i have the same problems as his SlimLine Playstation 2 scratches the outer portion of the disc perfect circular scratch it is
My PS2 is slightly used and it is 4 years old i was wondering if this problem can be repaired since my PS2 is in good condition only that it destroys my Games.
Buying a new one would be my option if my PS2's condition is pretty bad
I need help on this........ please i love playing PS2!!!!!!!!1111111
Yeah ok guys im having the same problem as most of yous, slimlines pad is worn out and my finafantasy 9 disks are getting destroyed with circle scratches, i was wondering, if i bought a ps2 the chunky one would it scratch the same? because ps2 chunky version doesnt spin does it?
also if i turned my ps2 slim on its side so its vertical would that reduce the scratches due to the vibration is less?
if anyone can help me it would be grately apreciated
