There are a number of reasons that the unit could be freezing up.

  1. Corrupted file(s)
  2. Low available disk space
  3. Viruses and/or malware
  4. Too many add-ons/toolbars/etc.
  5. Heat build-up
Number one is the hardest to find. So start with #2. The computer needs free hard drive space to operate. If the disk is nearly full or is very fragmented, this can slow the machine to a crawl. Check for available space and if there is plenty (20GB or more), then check for fragmentation under administrative tools. If the defragmentation tool recommends optimization, allow it to perform it and see if that helps.
For viruses and possible malware, run your virus scanner. It is always a good idea to get a second opinion on such things. Malwarebytes is a free malware scanner that works very well to find adware and some things that many antivirus programs fail to detect.
Many user feel that they have to have every bell and whistle. I've seen some browsers with 7-10 different toolbar add-ons. These almost always come with some adware and always slow down the browser. Uninstall all but the most essential toolbars for the best performance. Heat is a slayer of machines. Laptops are very susceptible to heat issue since they are often placed on beds, sofas, carpets, and yes, even laptop. Many of these units draw cooling air from the bottom and exhaust it to the side. Even those that draw air from the rear and exhaust to the side will often intake large amounts of dust, grit, and lint. These can partially or completely clog the heat sink unit and cause heat buildup of the processor. This will cause the processor to work slower and can actually cause it to thermally lockup, resulting in the need to reboot. Many units can be accessed to clean with a removable cover on the bottom; others may need to be serviced by a technician to clean.

Screen Freeze

Overheating causes laptops to freeze. If you haven't been using a laptop cooler then start using one. Laptops need proper ventilation. If that is not the cause then you might need to re-format your system as there might be important extensions/files that were deleted accidentally or your system might have been invaded by viruses.

If you had no issue in safe mode the only thing I've seen like that is a virus that cuts of your use of I/O ports. boot into safe mode and try doing a system restore to a time before this problem occurred. IF that doesn't solve the problem try doing a clean install of the OS

there is an application in Windows that causes your operating system to freeze. Maybe it's a virus or an application that is too high to handle the PC in startup. Try to use System Restore in safe mode option before booting in Windows to restore the previous state of your PC.

No running the laptop without a battery will not hurt it in any way. I would suggest like you thought that it's a cooling problem. It may need the cooling fins cleaned out and silicone grease reapply'd to the processor and heatsinks.

Laptop works fine in safe mode but freezes in normal mode

Okay, easiest first. In Safe Mode, your sound won't work. Safe Mode means only enough drivers to make your PC more than a doorstop get loaded, so that's okay.

Second, if it boots to Safe Mode without difficulty, try running System Restore in System Tools. Go back to some date before when your issue started. That should get you going. Don't worry, your data files will not be affected in System Restore. I hope this helps.

go into the bios at startup F2, and navigate around does it freeze there. if no then
start windows in safe mode F8 when windows logo shows.

If its not freezing then turn off the startup programs.
Start/run/msconfig and then uncheck load startup items
and start normally, click the dont show me this again /ok
any freezing.
If its freezing you may have a hardware issue.
if you have 2 sticks of memory remove on and or /reseat them
boot the dell diagnostics cd and check the cpu and memory.
