Why is "PROTECTION" displayed, followed by shut off?

Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits. Make a visual check of all PCBs looking for burnt/overheated parts.This will help identify the problem circuit.

you can replace the fan if you know how to do so but take it to a qualified technician and they will be able to sort it out for you and it should be that expensive

Check the CPU fan if it is spinning and also the CPU itself put thermal paste. So that the heat from CPU will absorbed by the heat sink.

When you encounter about this issue this is overheating problem maybe the CPU fan is not spinning and faulty already, you need to check the CPU fan and replace a new one.

The cpu get overheated and will shtdown to protect it. The fan continues to run until a CPU safe temperature is reached / sustained.

1. Use laptop on flat surface, not on pillow, carpet, bed, etc. that will restrict air flow. Using a can of compressed air, clear the air vents.

2. If the symptom continues, then the heat conductive paste between the cpu chip and the heatsink is no longer effective (hardened, too thin, etc.). Remove the heatsink and add thermal paste
($6 Radio Shack).
