The camera is not downloading pictures to the computer, seems like everything is in place and the USB connection is fine. It seems "connected", but photo program is not popping up.

If the cable is working fine then check the port on both camera and PC. on the camera maybe there's some dirt or lint stuck on the port try to clean it. On the PC might wanna try other ports usually the one at the back is recommended.

I agree - I had a usb cable that worked fine with other devices, but not with the D40x - I changed it and everything worked fine.

I experienced the same problem, and tried connecting the usb into another usb input on my laptop and it worked.
