Hi, if you have put a new cartridge it has a protection tape stuck on the nozzel, we have to remove it before installing it.the yellow light indicates no or bad cartridge, may be this should solve the problem.. let me know..

If you are printing using a color (not "black cartridge only" ) driver, yes, the printer won't print because it uses a "process black" when you use a color driver. In other words it creates black using the 3 colors, and doesn't actually touch the black cartridge. You will need to change the default driver to one that you create. go into control panel, hardware and sound, devices and printers (win7) right click the officejet 6500 (not the fax driver) and click printer properties click the advanced tab, and click printing defaults click the fast economical printing template. Change "print in gray scale" to Black Ink Only Click "save as" and name the profile "black draft" click the newly created "black draft" profile, and click APPLY and OK This will now be your default, and it will print in black and white while the color cartridges are empty.
Even though the interface says the cartridge is full, if the printer detects it being empty, odds are you will have to replace the color cartridge, even though you are only printing black.
You can try taking the cartridge out and cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser and reseat the color cartridge. If no change, replace the cartridge.
it is better to change the black cartige becaue there is the jam of the ink in black cartidge. or pick out the black cartidge and clean with soft paper in the place from where color is pour. then reinstall the cartidge. i hope it will ok. otherwise, change the cartidge. byee
Printer manufacturers design their printers to print some color mixed in with the black when you are only printing black. That is why your color cartridge is running out when you only print black and why it prints "weird colors" when the color cartridge is empty. Printer manufacturers sell the printers at a loss and make up the profit on the cartridges.
My yellow cartridge was doing the same thing as your black. So I took the cartridge out, and took a flashlight to see how it works. There is like a little straw on the right hand side which goes up into the printer cartridge, this I assume is to measure the ink. I took a needle and cleaned that 'straw' thoroughly. Reseated the ink, ran cleaning and test print, and then the printer found the yellow ink! You could give that a try. It might work for you too. (I have never used any ink but Brother ink in the printer, btw.)
