SOURCE: Natural gas hot water heater not stying lit

Probably a bad solenoid in the gas valve. Higher voltage of a new thermocouple keeps it open longer but it still fails over a period of time. Look into a new gas valve for the water heater.

SOURCE: GE gas water heater lights for only a few seconds.

Called GE and there is a glass vile under the burner that is defective and cuts off the oxygen.
They are mailing out a replacement to my house & have contracted a plumber to install. waiting 4 days now. They say that the glass vile incinerates and there is not any thing left to it. The burner area is full of black soot. will post again one fixed.

SOURCE: Pilot light will not stay

You have tank-type gas water heater:
Gas water heaters need working thermocouple, adequate incoming fresh combustion air with no trace amounts of chemical, open vent to outside that drafts poison combustion product upward, clean burner tubes and combustion parts, correct gas pressure with no air in line, working gas control valve thermostat, no lockout condition such as tripped ECO caused by runaway heating and dirty combustion parts, and no lockout condition such as exposure to flammable vapors.

SOURCE: GE (Rheem) SmartShield Water Heater. it rained

Does it have an electric ignition? If so, remove the pilot light access panel, blow inside the chamber with a hair dryer. Do this until there is no more moisture inside. Then follow the lighting instructions. Try this even if it's a match start. Thanks and please rate.

New thermocouple on GE/rheem water heater pilot still won't lite

does the pilot go out when you let off the button? Or does the pilot not light at all?

If you dont get any gas at all to the pilot the the gas valve is bad.
Of you get a pilot light that goes out when you let go of the button then the therno couple is not reading the flame (needs adjustment so the pilot flame touches it)
did you kink the new thermocouple? or over tighten it at the gas valve.
if it was kinked its now toast, cant straighten them. If kinked and starightened the fluid inside has broken the inner seal and wont work.

Rheem 22V50F1 pilot won't stay lit. Changed thermo couple & it lit, ran then went out. Let it sit overnight & it lit, ran then went out. What next? p.s. The unit is 5 years old. Thanks

If pilot lights and flame is robust and clear blue, and pilot goes out later, then some suspects can be excluded: air in gas line, low gas pressure, thermocouple is overtightened (finger-tight + 1/4 turn), thermocouple not positioned correctly in the flame, dirty pilot tube.
If flame is yellowish and small: then clean pilot tube and combustion parts.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html#clean
Remaining suspects can include: air in gas line, low gas pressure, bad gas control valve, tight house so household vent fans pull air down water heater vent that blows out pilot, hot attic with inadequate ventilation, water dripping down vent.

I have an Americdan Water Heater 50 gal. gas. 38000BTU the pilot light does not stay lit. what can i do?

Usual problems are:. Bad thermocouple, Bad vent, blowing pilot outl. Too small of pilot flame. Low gas pressure Leaking water heater, dripping on pilot. Bad gas valve. If your water heater is more than 8 years old and the gas valve is bad, I would replace the water heater. IF you decide to replace the pilot or the gas vavle, be sure to mount pilot exactly as is was designed. If you replace gas valve get an exact replacment or a "listed" replacement. If you'rd doing this and it's older, replace the temperature/relief vavle also. Water heaters can be very dangeroius if not properly repaired/maintained.

I have a Rheem direct vent gas water heater. When

Hello,
If you are not seeing a spark at the pilot assembly where the pilot flame lights, then it is probably not sparking in the right place. You may have a short in the wire or a cracked porcelain ignitor, causing it to spark elsewhere. If you can remove the access panel, you may have to relight the pilot manually with a butane lighter. To resolve the issue of the flame blowing out, make sure your vent outside has a cap on it and that the vent is not partially blocked with a bird nests, etc. Hope this helps. Douglas

My 3 year old "Smart Water" heater will not turn on. No hot water

It sounds like there is air in the line, so open the gas line just a little for a few short seconds to let some gas out, after that, keep the one red dial on pilot then turn the other to about medium. Light the pilot by depressing the red button, then once the pilot is lite, continue to hold the red button for about 1 minute, Once that is done slowly release the button and then turn the dial that is set to pilot to on position and give it about 1 hour to heat up
