Mine has been locking up, although I get it to go - after cleaning and oiling- I've read that the ball bearing weren't properly greased on earlier models and I'm concerned that might be my problem, which will lead to bigger problems.

Are you using bobbin thread? Is your thead new? Is themachine threaded correctly?
Make sure that when you thread the upper part the thread go under the circle that pull it.
Another thing is that when you hit the start button, pull the upper thread until the machine goes two or three times. It helps the bobbin thread to come up and the machine start sewing.I you leave it along the thread sometimes doesnot comes up and that is why the machine beeps.
I use this technique to make sure it doesnt beep and to cut the thread (the one at the beginning so it doesn't mess my design)
you might try checking the needle, it could be damaged, bent, or blunt
then see if you can pick up the bobbin thread.
if you still can't pick up the bobbin thread it's possible that the machine could be out of time.. it would need to be serviced by a sewing machine repair shop & they can tell you if your sewing machine is one that has to be oiled or a self oiling machine.
here is a free manual from singer, look in it and see if it show about
oiling the machine, if it doesn't contact singer and see if the machine
is one of the self oiling machines

SOURCE: Can't get the feed dogs to come up on my Singer Futura XL 400 sewing machine
Hi Susan,
Happy New Year!
try engaging the "Feed Dog Switch" and turn the flywheel on the side with a gentle back n fourth motion. Sometimes they get stuck with all the fuzz and buildup in the switch mechanisms from use. If that doesn't get you going, a visit to the authorized repair shop might be needed.
Cheers,
Kelly
