Replace just the lid lock assembly to start with and see how it goes. Lids are quite expensive and don't usually need replacing. You can always get a lid later if you still have problems.

Hi, well this usually happens when the main controller unit fails, if you want to DIY then you first must obtain a service manual, and work through the troubleshooting steps, and use the manual to then obtain the parts numbers for spares. But however most likely the very best thing to do will be to get it looked at by a professional, call in a pro, and ONLY first ask for a "Quote" as to potential costings and go from there, this really is the best course of action.

The end caps come off by placing your hand over the TOP of the console and lifting each one from the back and pulling forward. If you can't get them to come off by hand, try placing a screwdriver in the top groove in the back and give it a twist to pope the cap free. Once the caps are removed follow these steps:

1. Once the console has been released it will lift up and fold back over the back of the washer in its resting position. Use care not to stress the small plastic hinges that hold it on. They can break easily.

2. Under the console will be two large brass colored clips. Take a large flat blade screwdriver and place it in the groove of the clip on the washer top. With the screwdriver firmly in the groove, push away from you towards the back of the washer. This will release the clips.

3. Disconnect the lid switch connector plug. This is the white colored plug on the washer top under the console.

4. Remove the washer casing. Open the lid of the washer. Using one hand, grip under the front rim of the washer opening. Do not grab the wash tub, just the casing. Tilt the washer case from the back first towards you, slide forward slightly, and then lift up. The entire case comes off exposing the wash tub and components.

If you are replacing the lid switch, you will now have full access to remove it from the under the washer casing.

To reinstall the washer case, follow these steps:

1. With the lid of the washer open, grasp the case under front rim and place it on the washer frame. While looking down through the washer lid opening, make sure the front lip of the case is placed UNDER the washer frame and rocked back onto the frame to ensure that the small cleats on the frame fit into the slotted grooves on the washer case base. If you do not get the case seated correctly it will rattle and vibrate while the washer is in operation.

2. Make sure the back of the washer fits into the washer casing on each side by leaning over the front of the washer and grasping the back panel and pull towards you. Reinsert the brass clips by placing the clips into the slot on the back of the washer first, and then forcefully push then down into the opening on top of the washer.

3. REINSTALL LID SWITCH CONNECTOR. It is easy to forget. If you do not reconnect it, the washer will not work correctly.

4. Reinstall console.

If you have any questions about this repair, please post back and let me know. You can view some excellent exploded view diagrams of your washer at searspartsdirect.com for assistance in locating parts if needed. I hope this helps you.

Replacing Water Inlet Valve on Kenmore & Whirlpool washers

This is for Kenmore & Whirlpool model TOP LOADING washing machines.

On steps below walks you through how to replace the water inlet valve.

Please, read all instructions thoroughly BEFORE attempting. This is a simple repair that any “Do-It-Yourselfer” can accomplish. Follow the steps provided:

1. Unplug washing machine.

2. Remove console. This can be accomplished in one of two ways depending on which type of console you have.

a. If the console has removable end caps, the caps lift off by prying on the top from the back of the washer. The cap will pull off towards you as you are facing the unit from the front of the washer. There will be a screw under each end cap that you will need to remove.

b. If the console does not have removable end caps, you will need to slide a putty knife under the front corner of each side about 4 incahes in from tha corners and push in while lifting up. There is a retaining clip under each side that has to be released.

3. Once the console has been released it will lift up and fold back over the back of the washer in its resting position.

4. Under the console will be two large brass colored clips. Take a large flat blade screwdriver and place it in the groove of the clip on the washer top. With the screwdriver firmly in the groove, push away from you towards the back of the washer. This will release the clips.

5. Disconnect the lid switch connector plug. This is the white colored plug on the washer top under the console.

7. The inlet valve is located on the back panel with two or more sets of electrical connectors attached to it. The connectors are usually color-coded to indicate which valve is HOT and which valve is COLD (In the case of a Mixing Valve, you may have additional electrical connectors). Remove the connectors and check the contacts for corrosion. Sometimes a good cleaning can restore a valve solenoid to working order. (You may want to label the connectors, if necessary, to ensure you know how they go back on).

8. Disconnect the small rubber water hose(s) attached to valve with a pair of pliers to release the hose clamps. Inspect the hose(s) for any evidence of cracking.

9. With the water hose(s) removed, loosen the mounting screw(s) and the inlet valve comes off.

10. Re-install new inlet valve following these steps in reverse order. Pay careful attention to make sure you correctly connect the HOT & COLD electrical connections (RED is usually the HOT water side). Make sure all hoses are fitted back in place and the hose clamps are snug.

11. Re-install washer case. With the lid of the washer open, place grasp case under front rim and place it on the washer frame.

12. Make the back of the washer fits into the washer casing on each side and reinsert the brass clips. Place the clip into the slot on the back of the washer first, and then forcefully push it into the opening on top of the washer. It will snap back into to place.

13. REINSTALL LID SWITCH CONNECTOR. It is easy to forget. If you do not reconnect it, the washer will not work correctly.

14. Reinstall console.

When I push the start button I get a beep and the message is: "od" and the washing machine doesn't start

The FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

The OD alarm means the FAV6800A/FAV9800A Control Board has not sensed a lid open condition for three completed wash cycles even though you opened the lid.

You have lost signaling from the Left Lid Lock back to the Control Board.

What I would do next is remove the Left Lid Lock and very carefully open it up. See page 34 for removal steps. Just remove the left lid lock don’t worry about the right. Once you have the Left Lid Lock in your hand you need to open up the case halves.

I found it is very easy to break off the enclosure locking tabs. I use a fine flat jewelers screw driver and X-acto blade and work around the locking tabs to open the case halves. I wedge small paper clip ends or tooth picks in the case halves as I work around the tabs. Once the case halves are open I believe you will find corrosion issues such as seen in my pic’s.

7c2b931.jpg
You can clean up the corrosion with WD-40 and finger nail
emery boards.

Hit the plug end with a couple of squrits if WD-40.

I believe you will find the black lead has broken loose from one end of the magnetic reed relay. It can be soldered back on. If you don’t want to deal with that you can order a replacement. Left Hand Lid Lock.

Lid switch need to replace switch or fuse, is the whole switch in the lid ???

Hey fireball1711 I'm at work on lunch break I give you a few some info to get ya started. The Left Lid Lock has big time problems with corrosion issues with it?s proximity to the bleach dispenser. Are you throwing an "OP" or ?OD? error when you hit the start button? Take a look at these links below to get you started. You will find a replacement part number for the Left Hand Lid lock the Service Manual and a parts look up links. The common console errors that stop the washer from working are ?OP? & ?OD? caused by an open lead on the magnetic reed relay, lid magnet out of position and corrosion on the male pins and plug assembly. The last alarm is the ?FL? error code for failed to lock again corrosion issues produce these faults most of the time. Don?t worry about the Right Hand Lid lock. I would disconnect it?s plug, tape of the plug end. It simplifies troubleshooting. You only need Left Hand Lid lock to operate for the washer to work as designed. If you can give me the details on the Console error codes you display that will help. Try the tips I mention in the links below and post back with any questions. I can dedicate more time to your issue after work tonight. OD Alarm OP Alarm Good Luck??. Rich

"od" alarm on neptune tl

Hey geonkarla637,

Good job on troubleshooting, let’s focus on the Left Hand Lid Lock. It has the dual signaling functions to allow the Machine to operate as designed. The first signaling function is “Lid is Open/Lid Closed” signaling the “OP” error code for lid is OPEN if you press the Start button at the Start of a cycle or during a pause and resume portion of a cycle and “OD” error code if the machine has not seen the lid open for three completed machine cycles your issue. The second signaling function is “Failed to Lock” the “FL” error code.

Because the Control Board programming is looking for the contact open/closure transitions at appropriate times of the wash cycle from the Magnetic Reed Relay in the left lid lock. I see no way to fool it by bypassing the magnetic reed relay in the Left Hand Lid lock assembly and have the machine work as designed.

What I would do next is remove the Left Lid Lock and very carefully open it up. I found it is very easy to break off the enclosure locking tabs. I use a fine flat jewelers screw driver and X-acto blade and work around the locking tabs to open the case halves. I wedge small paper clip ends in the case halves as I work around the tabs. Again I stress they break off in a heartbeat take it slow and no coffee for 24hrs before you begin this operation …. (:

How do the black and red wire on the reed relay look? If they look like this I would take a low wattage soldering iron fine pencile tip 25W no more than 60W iron and solder back on the broken end if that has happened. If you don’t want to deal with that you need to replace the Left Hand Lid Lock .

fce1267.jpg

268e05d.jpg
I would also use a drop or two of WD-40 on the slide switch in that signals “Lid Is Locked”. I’m going to include a pic of my attempt to document the Left Hand Lid Lock Control Board inputs and signaling outputs. I have labeled the Pins on that lock assembly for my reference, I cannot correlate them one for one to the schematic packed in the machine console. I have measured and watched the +12VDC input and output transitions with my DVM for the Lid Is Closed and Lid is Locked on the Control Board at connector P3. If your Left Hand Lid Lock is signaling correctly out of the assembly then I would trace the +12VDC signaling back to the control board. From your previous troubleshooting you have insured there is no corrosion on the male Left Hand Lid Lock assembly and the mating plug end.
8fdcfb6.jpg

Please let me know what you find, I hope this helps; I’m a rookie owner still learning how to troubleshoot/repair the machine.

As a side note I unplugged the Right Hand Lid Lock and taped up the plug end. I would never replace that lid lock if it failed my choice; I find it helps to simplify troubleshooting.
Good Luck …………..Rich

Getting off the End Caps

The end caps do not come off on this type of control panel. There is a retaining clip holding it in place at each front corner. You need to insert a putty knife between the top panel and control panel at the left and right front corners. Push the knife straight in from the front and push to release the retaining clips while lifting the panel. Once both clips ar released, the panel will open up. You can view a diagram of the console at searspartdirect.com. Just type in your model number and look under the "Control Panel Parts" heading. The retaining clips are listed as item number 8.

NOTE: Sometimes the clips will come off and fall down inside the washer cabinet. If this happens, you may be able to retrieve the clip by moving the washer and looking underneath. However, if it becomes caught somewhere inside the cabinet, you will need to remove the exterior cabinet to retrieve it. Just follow these steps:

1. Unplug washing machine.

To reinstall the washer case, follow these steps:

1. With the lid of the washer open, grasp case under front rim and place it on the washer frame.

4. Reinstall console by aligning the retaining clips with the holes on the top panel and pushing straight down until you hear a "click".

If you have any questions, or need additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

How do you clear a od error code on a maytag fav6800aww

I agree with fastnhonda troubleshooting. I will just toss out some additional info. I’m an owner like you just trying to troubleshoot from a distance. The OD alarm is signaled by the control board when the control board has not seen a lid open signal from the left lid lock for three completed wash cycles. Could be corrosion issues with the left lid lock and or plug connecting to the left lid lock. If you pull the power plug on the machine then re-power up does the “OD” alarm clear? This might clear the “OD” alarm for three wash cycles. If it does can you do this; open the washer lid and start a Spin Only cycle with the lid open do you throw an OP (Lid Is Open) alarm to the console? If so do you clear the “OP” alarm when you close the lid? I’m checking the signaling functionally of the Left Lid Lock assembly of the magnetic reed relay and lid magnet thru the left lid lock and plug back to the control board.
If no results come from above testing and you want to DIY the repair I would remove the left lid lock (remove the left lid lock as shown on page 34 of the SM) and inspect for corrosion issues as the other forum member speaks to and a possible broken wire connection on the magnetic reed relay. See the red & black wire going to magnetic reed relay switch as shown in the pic. below. Note the black wire is broken away from one end of the magnetic reed relay do to corrosion. If you take apart the left lid lock the tabs holding the case halves together break off very easy so be careful on disassembly. I would not replace the right lid lock just yet. Removing the plugs on the lid locks is difficult so be careful. I would remove the left lid lock and inspect and clean up wih WD-40 if there are corrosion issues such as shown below or a broken wire (re-solder) on the magnitic reed relay. If this doesn’t resolve the “OD” alarm I would then replace the left lid lock only at this time. The right lid lock is not needed for normal washer operation.

Support info;

Left Lid Lock always give you pats supplier you machine model number when ordering parts. No machine serial number is required for this part.

Disconnect the washer power cord.
To raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. See page 33 of the SM for putty knife insertion point.
