you might need to replace the backlight on the screen, the CCFL has burnt up like normal fluorescent light does after a few years of continuous use.

Contact the supplier for support, you should have a warranty for at least a year on the divice. You may need to proveide proof of purchase for service through a retailer.

Your unspecified new tablet has a brand and a model, So try to do a factory reset to your new tablet. Maybe it is in your user's manual.
If you don't know or cant find out how, input a google search for those terms:

If your tablet is still acting up after reset, take it back from where you bought it, It's new and should have warranty

You will need the model number, search Google for the battery using the model number and the word battery. Some tablets are not designed to be user serviceable but I have had luck with changing the battery as long as you are patient and careful. Try this to see if it fixes it.

Locate the switch next to the power cord. Switch the button to the reset selection. Now hold the stop button for about 5 seconds. That should get you back to where ya need to be. I hope that helps.

This is the most common problem with tablets - there are literally hundreds of people asking the same question and i have had the same problem myself - its usually corrupt bootloader or OS and can be a nightmare to repair.
Sounds like its borked.
Have you pressed the reset button on the back - pinhole - press it with a pin its a long shot.

The real fix is to go into recovery mode using the power button volume up combo. Then select the restore tablet option.

If none of that works you will have to sideload or reinstall using an sdcard a replacement OS - Try cyanogenmod - your tablet will have to be rooted and have the cm bootloader installed however - tablets are not easy things to repair when the software goes belly up. Its actually a disgrace and I have been repairing computers and latterly tablets for the last 30 years and it is by far the most common issue with any tablet except Apple - there is a reason they are so expensive - lol

Order it from Best Buy. Insignia is their house brand.

when it freezes n this such way you should hold in the power button and after about 30seconds or just over the unit will cut out and reboot. but as you are too late to try this you may have caused it to burn out.
if the device is younger then 2 years send it back to get fixed.
samsung offer a 2 year guarentee with their devices, they may not fix your one you send back but they will replace it with a referbished unit of the same spec.
