I've broken a few needles and replaced them with the flat side to the back and pushed the needed as far up as possible and tightened it. It continues to hit the metal plate.
Sounds like your needle is set to off-center. Check your manual. You may have a straight-stitch plate in your machine but you have it set to stitch off center or it is set to zig-zag stitch and the needle is unable to clear the stitch plate.

Threw mine in the trash. Sew by hand is 100++% better than breaking needles / adjusting tensions, etc all day long, sheesh. Piece of junk, that machine is.
