My HDTV went out in a lightening storm. What could it be?

It has a blue picture at first and says HDMI2 in the upper right hand corner, then it goes horizontal crazy across the screen, then it goes pop pop then black and no picture.

Is your TV plugged into a surge protector? If not it very well may have gotten a power surge during the lightening storm that fried components in the TV.
Or is the TV connected to a cable box? It could be that the cable box took the hit if it's not plugged into a surge protector.
Or a possibility of both.

Testimonial: "No, it was not connected to a surge strip. Yes, the tv was connected to a Direct tv box and that is working. I know something took a hit but what? Video card? Main board? Power supply? I gave symptoms of what the tv is doing. Thank you"

It starts out like it wants to work then makes pop pop fizz fizz noises, then goes black...I am ready to look at the components myself. Just thinking you may have some insight from the symptoms I gave you. Thank you for your time.

I could be any of those; once you open the TV and look at the components you should be able to tell. Most likely the power board/main board.

Okay, thought so. I'll look for damage as in (raised or blown out items, correct?) and go from there.

You should see burn marks (black spots) or blown capacitors (little "cans")

Blue dots center and yellow stain right hand corner on 60'' sonytv

Yes, I do. It needs a new light engine. Very costly repair. However, Sony has extended the warranty on many of these LED projector sets. You need to call a local Sony authorized service center and see if your model is covered. Otherwise this repair could run over a thousand bucks.
