Blades spin but not fast enough to cut grass, can hear them slowing and then they start chugging. Deck at full height and belt is not too loose (adjusted to max tightness)

Do the engine rpms drop or only the blade speed?

If belt is tight at cutting height and engine rpms hold, then the vbelt from engine to deck is likely is dry burnished or oily.

First check the blades are install cutting edge down (fin up). If belt from engine to deck has a glassy finish (burnished) replace belt or remove burnish with sandpaper.

It appears be relatively complicated deck system. See owners manual regarding deck remove/install.

Mower deck blade speed slows in thick grass.

if the belt is tight then it must be the clutch slipping the clutches cost $200-$300 so double check the belt

Mower blades speed slows down in thick grass, the engine speed remains constant 217D

Hi, check that the belt is not worn and bottoming out in any of the pulleys and also check that none of the deck spindles are stiff to turn with the belt removed. Regards Phil.

JD STX38 mower stalls when deck is lowered

If the belt bounces then it has stretched or the belt tightener is not working. properly. Also check the shear pin in the drive pulley. If it has sheared the blades will try to turn but slip when any pressure is put on.

Lgt 2654 runs fine. But when I engage the mower it pulls the engine down alot and when I start to mow it really pulls it down and it hammers. All the pulleys and idlers are free.

Sounds like the mower belt may not be routed correctly around the pulleys or may be running on the wrong side of a belt guard. Also check under the deck to make sure there are no obstructions to the turning of the blade or bent blades....you did not state where the hammering was coming from ( engine or deck ) I can only assume that it is on the deck....so these are the things I would check. Also check the tightness of the bolt on the main pulley sheave (the pulley on the bottom of the engine that drives the belt. the bolt is in the center hole of the pulley) if it is loose it can cause misalignment of the belt and juddering of the deck. If the bolt is tight, remove the belt from the engine pulley sheave and start the engine and look to see that the crankshaft is not bent causing the pulley to wobble....worst case scenario....will require new engine...hope this helps... ;-D

I have a Toro LX466 riding mower. The drive belt

How to replace the drive belt on a Toro LX466 Lawn Tractor

1. Jack up the front of the mower-place a couple of blocks under the front wheels (retaining wall blocks from your flower bed work great). Block the back wheels so the mower won't roll off the front blocks.

  1. Remove the battery and battery compartment from under the seat. You can now see the cooling fan blade under the seat. The belt runs from the pulley directly under the fan to the front of the tractor.

  2. Lower the mower deck to its lowest position. Remove the deck hanger rod from the slots in the front of the mower deck.

  3. Remove the metal rod guard below the engine pulley. It's held in place on one side with a bolt, and the other side with a cotter pin.

  4. Take a large pair of channel lock pliers (about 18 in long work great) and clamp them down directly on the engine pulley, but not so tightly you distort the pulley.

  5. Remove the bolt from the pulley. It's a right-handed bolt, so turn it counter-clockwise to remove.

  6. Slide the pulley down the shaft until you can work the belt off. If the belt is too tight, then remove the spring from the idler pulley under the tractor. It's hooked on a bolt near the side of the tractor. You can remove it by grabbing the end of the spring with a pair of needle-nose vise-grips and slipping the end off the bolt. Then remove the old belt from the tractor.

  7. Take a new belt (preferably Kevlar) and start at the back of the tractor (with the pulley under the cooling fan) and thread it through to the front of the tractor. The flat side of the belt rests against the idler pulley with the flat sides.

  8. Work the belt over the engine pulley and slide it back on the shaft. Tighten the bolt on the engine pulley hand tight. Then check the belt to make sure it hasn't slipped out of the groove on the cooling fan pulley.

  9. Clamp the engine pulley with the channel lock pliers and tighten the bolt.

  10. Make sure the belt is routed correctly on the idler pulleys. If you had to remove the spring on the idler pulley, replace it. You can do this by grabbing it with the needle-nose vise-grips and placing it on the bolt-make sure it's above the washer. Then remove the vise-grips and gently pry it over with a small screwdriver until it slips into place.

  11. Replace the metal guard below the engine pulley. Hook the mower deck back onto the deck hanger. Replace the battery compartment and battery. Unblock the mower.

I have a model 13aq609g063 troy bilt riding mower. It has a 18hp briggs & stratton, 2 cylinder, ic engine. the engine runs fine, the bottom pulley on the engine for the pto belt turns when running, and...

Another possibility, is a broken spring or a tight/ rusted idler pivot arm.
with the engine off & the deck down, engage the pto & pull on the belt to see which pulley is the tensioner

Engine chokes & dies when deck PTO engaged...

you need to start with your electric clutch and then backwards to your idler pulleys and deck spindles and bearings.
your electric clutch should almost stop the blades instantly when disengaged ,check the center bolt in the clutch to be sure it is tight also
remove the belt from the electric clutch and energize clutch any noise? sometimes the bearing goes bad in the clutch itself.
check all of your 3 spindles for noise and loose. remove belt and spin by hand and listen for quiet and they should turn free with no binding
check blade tightness
any item the belt goes around needs to be looked at for secure and operable.
