hello i also bought a brother machine from usa you need to buy a step down converter don't use your machine till you get one or it will destroy the machine hince the smoke you can buy the step down voltage converter on amazon or ebay good luck

Yes, India voltage is 240, USA is 110. You have probably fried it, should have purchased a machine from another 240V country like Australia of used a voltage converter to break it down.

US uses 120 VAC
If you have other than 120 VAC you likely have a problem!

Sewing machine companies advise against. You need buy machine in India.

Sorry to say, you probably burned up the motor (judging from the burning smell). The solution would be to replace the motor, but that might not be as easy as it sounds, especially if your sewing machine is computerized.
