In order to do that, your TV will need to have a dedicated power or On / Off button. It may be a symbol like "I / O". Most TV have a button like that, but yours may not. If it doesn't - you can pick up a new universal remote to work your TV for less than $20.
What you'll need is your TV's brand name (Sony, Magnavox, Toshiba, RCA, etc.) and if possible - the model number. Not many remotes require a model number - but it can't hurt to have it. Go to a store that sells universal remotes (Fry's Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc.) or eBay and either look for a universal remote that indicates it has the codes built in for your brand (and model) TV or a used on on eBay for your specific TV. When selecting a new remote, you pay extra for the number of devices it will operate. If you only need it for TV, than a one or two device remote will be all you need. If you want to stop using your DVD player remote and one for your stereo too, then you'll need a remote that can do 3 or more devices. Make sure that the remote will work for the brand and device. One that does Toshiba TVs may not do Toshiba DVD players. Checking the remote's web site can help you figure this out instead of standing in a store trying to figure it all out.
If you've switched the set OFF with its remote control, you should have that remote control to switch it ON back. Then only, you can synschronze it with a universal remote control
Is there a switch on the side of the remote? If there is make sure it is switched to TV. If there is not, try removing the batteries from the remote for 5-10 minutes. It should revert to the TV mode. Thanks for using fixya.
You may need to manually switch the input on your tv via the menu on the front panel switches if your universal remote does not have an input button or it just wont respond.
I found on my toshiba tv remote that the code for the rca was 039
some of the buttons were mixed up but its better than nothing.
Also remote has to be set to Aux. 2
You need the original remote controller to be able to switch input modes.Universal ones usually don't work. If you don't have the original remote and can't find it ever or if it is too expensive you can buy an rf modulator ( very cheap) and connect your dvd player, game console etc) to the modulator then connect the modulator to your antenna with a coax cable. This worked for me. It placed the connection to channel 4 and other cable channels are still working,
You can buy the RF Modulator from: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180299245670
