Ice on bottom of freezer floor. Turned off fridge so it could completely thaw. Should I do anything else?

check all the shelves,check the bin on the door,sometimes one side is up farther than the other side keeping the door from closing or remove the bin and shelves and see if it closes,one of them are hitting or the tracks on the sides are bad but most likely it will be the bin or shelf.

whirlpool bottom freezers with ice forming on the freezer floor is nothing new. It is formed most likely by an ongoing issue with the design of the defrost drain becoming clogged and there is a revised kit for it part# W10619951.

Whirlpool has extended the warranty of this issue only to two years from the date of purchase and will usually give you the part but charge for install.

It can be put in in less then 10minutes using just a 1/4" hex bit and a small flat blade screwdriver to release the clip on the old "slide" style drain.

Once installed,it is best to defrost the fridge for at least 24 hours (doors open and unplugged) to make sure all ice is melted from inside the unit.

If your drawer was not closing,you would have frost.. If your defrost timer (which virtually no newer units have since digital controls are the norm with adaptive defrost) then you would have frost,not ice.

The fact that you have water is telling me it is defrosting and re freezing.

Normally I would agree a water line is the issue however on this particular fridge this is not the case. If you open the freezer door, notice the placement of your hand. Unless it is dead center of the handle this is the cause of the problem and what I believe is a major design flaw. Depending if left or right handed, every time the door is opened the metal tracks that hold the door are being bent. If you remove the bottom freezer basket you will notice the back support bar that is attached to the metal rails is not longer straight.What ends up happening is, certain times when the door is pushed closed it seals completely and other times it does not. The times it does not, there is inch gap between the rubber seal on the door and the fridge itself(left or right side). The freezer warms up and items start to melt. As the cycle of freeze and thaw continues you end up with the entire basin full of ice. Eventually when the door does not shut properly and the ice melts it has nowhere to go expect your floor. This is why sometime you will have a pool of water and sometimes you won't but it always leak from a corner. Learned this first hand and ending up ruining 30sq of hardwood floor

Hi, The drain hole is plugged with debris or ice...
Just had to thaw my own out tonight, it was doing the same thing... Take the bottom draw out and maybe the bottom shelf and then you will see the ice buidup in the back and on the floor... Thaw it out and make sure the drain hole is open... then you will be okay again...

This is what it sounds like to me. There is a drain hole for the defrost water to drain down to the "drip pan" If that hole in the drain pan is clogged. Then when the defrost system melts away the frost in the cooling coils. Every 6 or 8 hours. The water will accumulate in the bottom of the freezer compartment and turn into ice. This is a very common problem.
The solution.

Put the food in the freezer and fridge into coolers and pack with Ice. Get the 99 cent coolers at the supermarket and buy some Ice there too.

Shut the fridge down and open the freezer door. chop out the Ice in the bottom of the freezer compartment, but not in the drain area directly below the coils. that will be hard to get to and you may damage the fridge if you just chop away.

To speed up the process, get some hot water in a glass and pour it into the area below the coils
(that should be a solid block of Ice as well). If you cant get to this easily, just wait for the fridge to thaw out naturally.

After it has thawed out, you should be able to locate the drain tube in the bottom of the small tray
below the coils. Stick a flexible piece of wire, or pipe cleaner or something of the sort into it to completely unclog it. So when you pour water into that tray, it immediately drains out completely.
into the "drain pan" located below the freezer compartment in the base of the fridge.

Your defrost drain line is frozen over.Remove everything from the fridge and turn it off for 24 hours with the doors standing open.
The drain line will thaw and you will return to normal operation.
You could also turn the fridge off, remove the freezer floor panel and back panel. Take a hair dryer and thaw out the drain hole. Takes about 2 hours.
You decide which procedure to use.

At some point the freezer got too cold and the drain froze (it is a poor design with a loop in the bottom). Once this freezes it will not thaw for a long time.

Here is what I did:

• Remove all items from freezer and let it completely thaw
• Pull unit away from wall to access rear
• Cut loop off drain line where it hangs in drain pan
• Place a bare copper wire (#12 will work) through the drain line and wrap it loosely around the heating coil above drain pan
• Enjoy

There is a drain for your freezer that is pluged.It may be pluged with ice or dirt.Try unpluging your fridge until it is completely defrosted,4 to 5 hrs. with doors open.
if there is dirt in it it may flush out or your heater element for the defrost is not working.

hi thanks for the question the freezer is more than likely frosted up now with the door left open the drain hose from freezer is clogged shut down let thaw remove panel at the back of fridge allow 24 hrs to thaw clean out the drain tube re level the fridge so that if the door is left open the door will close by its self raise the front legs to achieve this thanks the appliance doc

the coil is frosted over and no air is being pushed to the fridge it may clear up after a few defrost cycles or remove the food from the freezer and allow it to thaw completely (12hrs) the ice behind the back wall takes a long time to thoroughly melt or you will have soild ice instead of frost and then it will never thaw soild ice.
