The backup wire is typically attached to an always live power source so that when you turn the key off it retains settings.

Actually the "back up" wire connects to the back-up light circuit. It initiates the back-up camera when the car/truck is placed in reverse - if you have one installed.

I am installing after market stereo/wireless back up cam into a 2007 Dodge Dakota and wondering where to source power for cam receiver? All the instructions say are to connect to 12V source.

You should get an aftermarket installation harness for your new head unit, these are available at auto parts chains and Wal-Mart, online, etc. When you remove the stock stereo from your Dakota, it’ll have a plug or two that go to the truck’s wiring harness. The aftermarket wiring harness you’ll buy has identical ends so it plugs right in and the other end(s) will connect to the new stereo’s wiring that should be running out of the back of your new head unit. You can hook the BackUp Camera’s Power Wire in with your Head Unit’s Red(+) Power Wire as that’s a good spot since it’ll always have power when you need it to in that location. The BackUp Cameras usually have a “trigger” or “activation” wire that makes the camera come on and the Cameras I’ve installed always hook to your reverse light circuit or the truck’s neutral safety switch, so it’ll come on and display the camera view on your head unit’s Screen when you put the vehicle in reverse. A google search will tell you where and what color the wire is for this, for the reverse lights or neutral safety switch(usually under dash or under the steering column’s outer plastic cover between the steering wheel and the dash or instrument panel(speedometer, gauges, etc).

Definitely get the wiring harness for installing the aftermarket stereo, the only other way to do this is to make a big mess and you don’t want to do that since the harness is under $10.

So, no worries, this is simple and you’ll get it, just get the harness, and find out where the reverse light circuit is and wire the activation wire of the camera to it, maybe your camera only has one wire, if so that’s where it goes and you can disregard what I said above about running it with your new head units wiring(the red (+) Power Wire).

Go to AutoZone or your parts store of choice and ask for a harness to install an aftermarket stereo in your Dakota, they’ll hook you right up for a few dollars and you’ll be done in no time! Good Luck!

Reverse gear signal input h2

Backup Lamps
The backup lamp request signal is sent from the powertrain control module (PCM) to the body control module (BCM) on the class 2 message system. This signal is based on the park neutral position (PNP) switch signal. The BCM supplies voltage on the backup lamp supply voltage circuit to the backup lamps and to the automatic day/night mirror. Voltage for the courtesy lamp supply voltage circuit and backup lamp supply voltage circuit is from the TBC B fuse in the instrument panel fuse block directly through the BCM to these circuits. A short to ground on either of these circuits will open the fuse. The backup lamps are grounded at G401.
For trailer wiring, a separate backup lamp circuit is connected through the underhood fuse block from the TRLR B/U 10 A fuse to the trailer wiring harness.

When I power up the unit, the camera is displayed immediately, the backup wire turns the screen off.

There's a wire in the head unit harness that's meant to be connected to the vehicle's reverse light wire. If you don't have a rear view camera, this wire should not be connected to anything.

Need to hook up wiring harness for boat trailer. conector has been cut from ford explorer 94 4x4. dont know which wires need to be wired together.

the best way is with the use of a test light and find a good ground for one end and use the other to find your signals with the key on so to ensure power to the wires themselves and then with a 2 x 4 ahainst the seat propped the brake or assistance if available and find them as well also backup lights with the tire chucked so it dont roll on you find these as well by connecting via the diagram that the new harness came with or if none is available connect them until they are correctly working order then secure them should have a quick disconnect coupler with it so you may remove it for future use
