Hi Carol , I had the same problem. You should open the main cover, then, remove the 3 screws (see picture), and remove the nickel plated ring, then, take out one screw from the bottom (see picture), then open 4 screws that holds the gear box from the top .

Almost impossible to start up when anything is in the bowl. I can eventually get the ignition to "catch" but it is very intermittent and unreliable. The motor ignition is fine when using mincer.

Get some CRC in there and wriggle it about, once you get it off give the hole a good cleaning out and polish up the shaft.
