Put 4GB card in - OUT OF MEMORY appears.

I put a new 4GB card into camera. The screen has a message that the card is OUT OF MEMORY. I can't take a picture. NOTHING.

I have nikon coolpix L5, i just brought a 4gb memory card that's supposed to be compatible, but when i go to take a picture it say You cannot use this card?

It's possible the card is not faulty. Most new cards must be formatted in the camera first in order to work properly. Did you do that?

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problem listed here.

The S50 uses SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card, and will not work in the S50. You will have to confine your choices to cards 2GB and smaller.

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. If your camera is more than a few couple years old, it's likely it was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with older cameras.
For older cameras, you'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.

New 4GB Skandisk card, no memory and no images message

Hi,
Make sure the write protect lock is off by taking the card out of the camera, face the card towards you, look for a small white tab on the left hand side of the card, to unlock it push the tab down, it will be at the side of the card like this

. Pop it back in the camera and use the menu to format the card.

Error message - Memory card requires formating

Before suspecting the camera, I'd simply try another memory card in it. Memory cards can and do fail and often can behave inconsistently before they fail completely.
