The vent cover/door does not come open when the unit is on. It will open if we just want to vent the stove top. Any suggestion on repairing this so I can use the microwave?

Remove the light cover /filter opening.Its very easy to remove.The filter will be removed by hand and may give you the best reach.

microwave means you have a shorted membrane keypad (aka membrane switch).
If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by
itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.
So until it is repaired,
please leave it unplugged or leave the door
open when it's not in use, and of course one should never leave a microwave unattended while cooking.
