Because that's the way it was built. My Sony cybershot does the same.

Most cameras are designed that way, this enables you to do selective focusing, for example when you are taking a portrait the camera may focus on background instead of the person, by placing the small round or square you see in viewfinder , on the person face press the shutter half way, this lock focus , keeping the shutter pressed you can recompose the image , and take the shot , this enable you to take a sharp portrait, with a blurred background

Why are my photos blurry

I would think that you are not focusing your camera before fully depressing the shutter button Start by depressing your shutter button very lightly until you see the outline of a small square in the middle of the view finder . At that point you are in focus . Now fully depress the shutter button and take your picture . You must do this prior to taking each photo . Remember to just depress the shutter button about half way to focus your picture image , before pressing it fully . I hope this is of some help to you.

I have a Nikon Coolpix P500. I have to depress the shutter release button several time to get it to snap a picture. The indicator light shows a fully charged battery.

Did you change (unnoticed perhaps) anything to the settings?
Be aware your camera needs a little time to focus. And when conditions are bad, like little contrast in the subject or bad light conditions, the camera needs more time to focus.
Please try to shoot in automatic mode. Then when you have a subject press the shutter release button half way. Look if you framed correct and then press fully. This way every time the camera should click.

WHEN TAKING READY FOR SNAP A L IN RED COLOUR IGNITED IN THE MONITOR CONTINUOUSLY

When you are depressing the shutter release button from top to bottem in one go, the camera does not get enough time to focus. When the picture is not in focus a red light will shown on the screen or in the view finder. Try to press the shutter release button half way down, till the red light goes out and only then press the button fully.

Sometimes it takes a few seconds before my Canon Powershot SX10 IS will take a picture I have button pushed down but it won't take the picture?

Unfortunately that's how the camera is designed.
The camera has to do a number of things before it will take a picture. It has to check the lighting, and focus and make calculations based on those factors about how to set the camera to take the best picture.
It is best practice to get your subject in view. depress the shutter button half way and hold it so it can focus and determine the exposure, and then completely press the button the rest of the way to release the shutter.
Good luck

What exposure mode(s)? What focus mode(s)? Can you (not your wife) take pictures?

My nikon d70 wont focus at all

  • Make sure both lens and body are set for autofocus. There are two switches near each other with "AF" and "M" settings.
  • Check the camera's focusing settings, or do a factory reset (from menu) to 'start over'. Usually helps to have AF-Assist on.
  • Try setting the AE/AF-lock button (upper rear, near right thumb when holding camera) to turn on AF. The camera may respond better to this than half-pressing the shutter release.
  • Make sure the lens is fully attached to the camera. You shouldn't be able to rotate the lens without depressing the lens release button, and you should be able see a tight seal between the two.

Shutter-release

After the focus is confirmed, the Shutter-release time lag for the DiMAGE E201 is approximately 0.4 second. If the shutter-release button is depressed in a quick motion without making any pause to confirm focus, approximately 1.9 second is necessary.

Shutter Lag-Time

The G5 has a rather short shutter lag and a rather lengthy focus lag. So if you half depress the shutter release to focus, and then moments later fully depress the shutter release I expect you will find very little lag. But I would not expect a prosumer model to focus fast. hope this helps,
