Camera turns on and display shows info but can't get it to show an image of what I see.

Sound like a display wrong, I suggest visit your photo techinican.

It is known problem of ccd imager chip failure in Canon A85 camera and ccd imager chip will be replaced by local camera repair shop to solve this issue.
Since camera wont show live view/ blank screen so same gets saved as picture in memory card that is why no picture/ image in playback either.

its actually probably the display. there is 3 different displays. 1. shows picture with icons 2. shows just the picture and 3. is a solid black screen. just hit the display button to cycle through until your desired display is present

Push ring circling OK button to up or down positions and LCR display will change showing info or image. 

All this shows you is the underexposed (shadowed) parts of that particular image. To remove that from the LCD screen hit the INFO button and this will change the information that is displayed about that particular image. You can keep toggling the INFO button until you get it to just show the image by itself.

This definitely sounds like a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

your problem isinternal circuit fault the recording section is not working. which is not giving any signal to LCD . you nee dto give itr in service centre. fault may also come in change over switch which is not giving connection to LCD. Sangita

Something is wrong with the lens unit or the ccd imager. Please contact the nearest Authorized Sony Service. If you need more info please advice. Arpi

The filename (e.g. DSC0012.jpg) shows the image number, the filespec shows the date and time recorded. Most software will give you document info about resolution of the image. I wouldn't worry about what the battery status was when the shot was taken or how many other images were on the Mstick. I guess I'm not sure what you need.
