Sometimes it is due to a dirty read lens in the unit. More often it is due to newer DVDs having newer security encryption algorithms that the older units are not compatible with. You may want to check to see if there are any firmware upgrades for your unit that may bring it more up to date on the current encryption standards.

The main cause is that new DVDs are usually formed with newer formats. For example, if you play a DVD with a CD player, then none of your DVDs will be readout. The worst case could cause damages to both DVDs and disc players

Player connected dvd does not play looks like it is reading disk

First, try a different DVD. If this activity is present for all your DVDs then the laser either has a dirty lens or the laser LED itself is starting to fail.
If you know how to do it, you can try increasing the bias on the LED, but chances are that will only help for a while, and the laser will eventually burn out completely.
It's time to start looking for a replacement unit, unless cleaning the laser lens fixes the problem.

If the unit reads other DVDs then obviously the DVD itself is defective and not the player.

When i put a dvd in it says unable to read

Either the player is stuffed or the dvds are in the wrong format Try running a head cleaning disc through it there maybe dirt on the laser pickup apart from that its off to the dealer but be warned it's probably cheaper to buy a new player than get your one fixed

Slimtype DVD ROM unable to read self made DVDs ONLY...

I found this problem to more users of this model ..the only thing I can advice you is to try to change with another comp model ....some have a lot of theories ..about it ...and long fixes..but It seems that the problems came with some vista updates ...so ..either get on xp sp3...cause its reliable ..or change it ..cause it will never work proper..

Plays cds but not dvds

If the lens is clean (clean with cotton swab and alcohol), then the optics are failing. DVDs require more power and accuracy to be read than CDs. The ability to read CDs but not DVDs is usually a good indication that the optics are starting to fail.
