Hello Howard
I am thinking/sounds like that the problem is in the LCD display. How old is the camera, as it been stored in a safe location to avoid any serious damage and/or a dry location. Could possible where the display opens on the camera. May be you could find a local Sony dealer to take a look at it for you.
Please let me know the out come of your camera.
Ben.

I reviewed the owners manual to your camera.
On page 126 it says this:
1)The stereo tape is played back with HIFI sound set to 2 in the menu settings.
Set it to STEREO (see page 79)
2) The volume is turned to a minumum.
Press Volume + (see page 27)
3) Audio Mix is set to ST2 side in the menu settings.
Adjust the audio mix (see page 79)
If one of those 3 options doesn't work, try using an 8mm tape head cleaner.

I have fixed several PD150 and PD170 with the same problem. All of them had bad CCD.

Need go buy a cleaning tape from any local retailer and play for one minute. Video should comes back up.
This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.
