I have been told and can now change the "searching near" location, but when I turn my Garmin off, it goes back to the old searching near city and state.

On your Garmin you either don't have the maps for that region installed (tools->settings->map->map info) or you need to search near a different place.
By default the Garmin searches near you. try doing this from the home screen:
where to-> search near (upper right corner) -> choose "a different city" -> type branson-> choose "address" and search for your address near branson
On my Nuvi 200, after "Where To?", you have to select "Address". My instruction book says: 2.Change the state, country or province if necessary. 3.Touch "Spell City", enter the city/postal code, and touch "Done". Select the city/postal code in the list. (Not all map data provides postal code searching). If you are unsure of the city, touch "Search All". There are further steps, but "Depending on the version of maps loaded on your nuvi, the button names can change and some steps could be ordered differently".
on the "Where to" screen look for "near" or "searching Near", press on that and you can choose a different search location. otherwise you may have the wrong region installed. use Garmin Express to change coverage regions
Near the bottom of the Whereto>City screen is a button to change states. Select it first, so you can change to New York, then enter Troy when it returns to the City screen.
ONLY TYPE IN AUS THEN SEARCH IT SHOULD LIST ALL WORDS STARTING WITH THE LETTERS YOU PUT IN, IF THAT DOES NOT WORK THEN ITS PROBERLY YOU NEED TO CHANGE COUNTRY OR STATE, OR AUSTIN TOWN IS NOT IN THE UNIT, GO TO 2 D VIEW AND ZOOM OUT OVER THE AREA THE PLACE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AND SEE IF IT THERE, IF SO CHECK SPELLING OR PLACE ARROW ON LOCATION YOU WANT AND PRESS GO
hi peg, I recommend that you push the reset button on your garmin. it is located underneath the delicate frame around the screen. just carefully lift it off with a fingernail and push the reset button.
also, the data is only as good as what was given by the municipality. If they gave inaccurate data then garmin will give inaccurate directions.
Hello. Had the same problem and just solved it. Do this. Tools -> Manage My Data -> My Locations. Position to Home and then click Manage -> Change Location ..
