I am looking at a new Craftsman riding mower. It has a 420 CC engine with a 42 inch deck and automatic transmission. How many hp is this engine?

Maybe this will help.The mower deck part # 165892. Mower Deck Assembly 42" I not sure of the model # . I also don't know your tractor's model # either. This part # for the 42" mower deck,is installed on a 18.5 HP Craftsman Lawn Tractor. I believe there isn't any difference between a model !8.5 HP and a model 20.0 HP, tractor when it comes to a mower deck. B.Locke

Most likeley is a spring on the top of the deck or the cable that goes from said spring to the lever. if you could provide the model number I can look up the manual and diagram and show you.

Did it leak oil & seize up

Can you turn it over by hand

Is a belt or bearing preventing the motor
from turning?

Go to Craftsman, Order Tree or Parts Tree.com and input your model number. Choose the correct tab and go to the mower deck. It will give you a good over view of how the belt routes. Hope this helps.

look on deck or under foot pedal there is usually a diagram in those places

remove the deck and drive belt, then the pully and the four mounting bolts. unplugg all the wires and lift the motor out.
rural king has briggs and straton motors at their stores for a cheaper price than on line. I got a 18.5 hp for $420.
