Your brush is likely jammed with pet hair or other stuff it's picked up. Check the ends of the brush, where the bearings are, and clear the stuff jammed in there.

Vax carpet shampooer keeps burning out belts!

Question edited for clarity.

No Gary
It's not the carpet. The brush bar bearing ends are clogged up with hair and stuff. The brush wasn't turning properly and burnt the belt out. You put another one in and because the brush bar was still clogged and not turning freely, it burned out the new belt. Turn the machine over and try to turn the brush bar with your fingers. It is tight isn't it? Remove it and clean it. It should spin freely. I do my Dyson every 6 months. Video in the link.

I put a new belt on my vacuum and right away it broke

There may be a problem with the brush roller itself. When the belt is removed and you have the brush in your hand, make sure that you can turn it.

If the brush turns fine, what I suggest is put another belt on, and before you close it up, turn the brush with your fingers. The brush should turn. If not, and I have done this myself before too, the belt may have been caught under the brush and not able to turn at that point.

When you get it closed up again too, before plugging it in, give the brush another turn. Just make sure that it is not pinched by the lower housing too.

Good Luck,
Mark

THE ROLLER BRUSH WILL NOT TURN. I PUT ON A NEW BELT AND IT BROKE IMMEDIATELY. THE ROD THAT HOLDS THE BELT IS MOVING BUT THE BRUSH IS NOT MOVING.

Apparently something is binding the brush, keeping it from turning. Remove any string, hair, etc., that is wrapped around the brush. Removing the brush is the easiest way to do this, then cut the material through at one point.
While the brush is out, check the ends for signs of damage that may cause the brush to bind. Also, check the area the brush connects to.
Reattach the brush and try to spin it. If it spins freely, put your vacuum back together, with another belt, and try again.
If this doesn't work, I suggest a new/different vacuum.

The brush roller will not engage although the belts look good. Hoover upright windtunnel.

Sounds like the beater brush is frozen and won't turn. Remove the beater brush and clean off all debris, especially at both ends. You will find a square(?) piece at each end of the beater brush that holds it in place. This need to turn freely. Put a little WD40 on these where the center rod of the beater brush enters the small holders and turn by hand until they turn freely. Once this is done, assemble with new belt, making sure the belt is put on properly.

How to change belt on eureka whirlwind; what tool do I need

You will first need to remove the hood to gain access to the belt and brush roller. Turn the machine upside down, place the handle on the floor and the base on a counter. You will find several screws that hold on the hood, remove them. Turn the machine back to the upright position and remove the hood. On the right hand side,if your looking the front you will find where the belt goes. At the back you will find a silver shaft sticking out, put the new belt on there first. Then put the brush roller through the belt so it is in the carved out section of the brush roller. Then grab the brush roller by each end and stretch the belt till the brush roller fits back into the base. Turn the brush roller 3 compleat turns backwards and 3 forward to seat the belt in the proper position.
Then put back on the hood.

How to put the belt on the deit devil breeze

Here is a detailed discription on how to change your belt. Turn the machine compleatly upside down and place head on a flat surface. There are 4 screws to take out, then remove the base plate. Near the back of the channel the belt rides in you will see a stright silver shaft. Place the new belt over that shaft. The put the brush roller through the belt, so the belt is in the notched out section of the brush roller. Grab both ends of the brush roller and pull till the brush roller is back in it's origial spot on the base of the vacuum. Turn the brush roller 3 compleat turns backwards, then do the same forward to seat the belt. Put back on the base plate and put back the 4 screws. You are now ready to vacuum.

Take the nozzle of, remove the brush roll, put the new belt over the brush roll, re-install and put the bottom plate on, making sure that the belt is in the middle of the brush roll. Turn the big knob on the front until it locks, when it grabs the belt it will be hard to turn. Re-install the nozzle on the machine and lock it down. Turn the knob again all of the way, this will release the belt unto the pulley.
