Best way is if receiver has a sub woofer output that U can plug into a powered subwoofer input. If your sub is not powered all you can do is hook it up to speaker terminals. Best way to do is with the terminals that may be provided on back of subwoofer. In their absence U you have to be careful - if u hook up sub in parallel u lower the impedance that the amp sees and many amps will overdrive into a lower impedance - if you wire the sub in series you raise the impedance and effectively lower the power output to your speakers. And don't forget to make sure that you wire the units in phase to your other speakers lest you have sound cancellation.
It depends on the speaker and receiver inputs/outputs. If The speakers have bare wires, and the receiver has spring clamps, you are in luck! Check out what I mean by spring clamps in the image linked below. If you can give the model number of the receiver and describe the wires coming from the subwoofer, I can help a lot more.

Yes you can! I have the 405 as well. Using a RCA-style cable, simply connect your powered sub to the sub pre out on the back. If its turning off when you connect it and receiver has been working fine otherwise, troubleshoot. Either the sub preout (the 405 itself), the cable or the sub must be the culprit. 1st try a different cable, they do go bad. If problem persists, test the sub with another receiver or take back to store and have them test it. After that, the only thing left in the equation is the receiver itself. I've had mine for 15 years and lets face it, we've got our money's worth. A bad receiver is the best excuse to upgrade!

Yes. It needs to know you have a subwoofer or it won't send low frequencies out to one. Then you have to calibrate its level to match the rest of your speakers. Hit the SETUP section in the manual (available at retrevo.com).

it's not a compairtible problem. maybe you choose subwoofer off in system menu. just turn on.
SOURCE: Cannot get the subwoofer to
After making sure that your subwoofer is receiving power, as most models have their own amplifier, make sure that it actually is turning on. There is a possibility of a faulty power switch. Lets rule that out first.
Once the switch is on and the proper power connection is verified, turn your attention to the setup menu on your receiver. Navigate to the LFE/Sub output level. Adjust it up all the way. Then navigate to the crossover setting. Turn it up all the way. If the subwoofer also has it's own control panel including a crossover, turn that up all the way as well. Then with an input on the receiver that has a subwoofer output set up such as for DVD, play some audio. Or likewise you can also use the receivers' test tone capability that will pan each channel individually with a wide band pink noise signal that also includes a signal sent to the subwoofer output.
If this procedure does not produce results then send me a message including your subwoofer model and your observations of your systems' operation.
