Want to put windows 3.1 or even an olde version of dos on a dell inspiron 2400 Pentium 4 1gb RAM in order to use some highly outdated programs pre-windows 95 Is this doable?
The unit originally has Windows XP. Or better yet had XP.
I found some old games I use to love and they won't work even with dosbox or any other such software. They are DOS based games pre-windows 95.

Programs will work with this processor, running Windows XP.
For newer
Operating systems, there might be a problem with speed, due to the limitations
of the processing power of the processor.
The
motherboard for this Computer is likely to take old SD-RAM or even older EDO
RAM, which are difficult to find at a reasonable price nowadays, because they
are rare.
You should aim
for a motherboard with 4 RAM slots to accept as
much RAM Memory as possible.

There u go! and YES, 2GB is tha maximum RAM you can have on that one.
But NO, you can NOT use PC3200 sticks, this is what you can use: PC2100 (266-MHz) or PC2700 (333-MHz) DDR SDRAM (non-ECC)
There are PCI slots, but the processor, ram, and video capabilities are far below what modern components expect. You probably could get the wireless card to work, make sure the manufacturer has drivers for Windows 98 before you buy the card.
In my opinion you should maximize your RAM. For a Dimension 2400, Dell's manual claims the min is 128 Mb and the max is 1Gb. Not sure how you got to only 32Mb of RAM but you'll see a big improvement in performance if you increase it.
Do you have an old IBM or a Dell (the area you posed the question in)?
