SOURCE: My Royal Alpha 2001 typewriter has been unused for

Hi!
I'm going out on a limb here.
I assume the carriage returns but the line does not advance. Close?

- There is a setting for the linespacing which is either 0 (zero), or 1, or 1 1/2 or 2
Likely, this has been inadvertently moved.

- Also, there is a way of disengaging the linespace mechanism to allow typing to be made on unevenly space forms. This might have been moved.

Please feel free to contact me anytime.

SOURCE: BROTHER TYPEWRITER

Is your typewriter made by Royal or Brother? I think your question was mis-posted under Brother as opposed to Royal. IF your machine is a Royal, Brother will NOT be able to help you. THIS GOES FOR EITHER MANUFACTURER...Have you inspected the platen drive gear? Is it cracked, missing teeth or otherwise damaged? If not look on both sides of the typewriter for the drive motor. Look to see if the gear mates with the motor.

The humming is probably the motor turning but the drive belt may be broken. You would need a qualified technician to replace the belt if necessary.

WheelWriter 3 hums when turned on.

My best bet is a power supply. You can probably buy a working one on ebay for less than the repair.

Humming noise after turning typewriter on

If that is all that happens, no lights, no beeping you probably need a power supply or a board. If there are lights and beeping we need to know what it's doing.

I have an IBM Wheelwriter Typewriter II. A week ago the typewriter worked fine before a move from Texas to the St. Louis. When I reconnected the machine and turned it on nothing seems to happen. No...

Sounds like a power supply or a connector came loose in transit. If you know how to remove the case look for staples, paper clips etc. on or around the power supply and PC board.

When power applied print wheel and ribbon lift works ok. As printhead starts moving to left margin it will start moving and then and stop and just hum or buzz until power turned off.

Move the head back and forth by hand W/power off, look for debris in the printer area, put some WD40 on the silver shaft that the head slides on.

Hums, but no light and can't type

Turn the T/W off and see if the carrier will move freely back and forth. if it won't try some WW40 on the silver shaft it slides on.

Linda, Depending on what make and model you have it could be several things. The newer TW's use a print wheel which has to home itself each time the power is turned on. This tells the print motor how far to turn for the correct letter. Make sure there is no debris and everything is seated properly... platen, print wheel, etc. Once again, this depends a lot on what kind of TW you have. MM85
