Sounds like a possible lack of flow. I have heard that sound before when pump suddenly shuts off. Water is boiling in heat exchanger

Just solved this problem by doing alot of reading online. Best solution that i found that actually worked was, "remove the exit piping of the heat exchanger header (heater outlet) and jam a 3/8" or so stainless bolt or rod between the heat exchanger exit tubes and the top of the baffle plate. This should hold the plate down and force water flow through the heat exchanger properly. For extra security, glue (thickened epoxy, or JB weld) the baffle brace in place." I used about a 5-6" long 3/8" stainless steel bolt and screwed it in between baffle plate and the inlet copper pipe leading into the heat exchanger. I really did not expect it to work.... but it seems to have solved my problem. Pretty damn rigged if you ask me but no more banging noises or internal exploding steam. Costs $1 to fix and pretty easy to do. This is after I replaced heat exchanged with another used one (didnt work) and put a clamp around the diverter plate to hold it to the roof of the pipe (also didnt work).

The H100ID1 has a known design flaw that allows free flow past the heat exchanger causing localized boiling in the heater (banging), a no flow condition and then shutdown.
Simple free fix is here: https://sites.google.com/site/haywardpoolheater/
Worked fine until they removed the pool a decade or more later.

VERY low water flow!
Or... No water flow.
This heater as all heaters do, need to have sufficient water flow thru them, or else they Bang like this.
This then creates a problem, for future banging - due to lime up!
The minimal water flow gets so Overheated, that it turns to steam! The steam knocks and pushes the heater around, then the Minerals will precipitate out of the water and forcefully attach to the inside walls of the heat exchanger! Which will then drastically reduce the inner diameter of the exchanger making a much smaller passageway for water to travel thru! This is a major problem to remain this way. It will then need to be dismantled and de-limed to increase the holes once more, and allow a proper water flow.

Raypack 2100 pool heater runs for a couple of minutes then loud banging noise. heater shuts off and error code HL appears

That HL is your high limit shutting the heater down. The banging is the sound of water boiling in the heat exchanger because it is moving too slow. This is almost always the result of the bypass or governor (thermostat) not working properly, so too much water is bypassing the heater. It's not too hard of a fix.

When the burners ignite, within one minute it starts making a loud banging noise and then the HS code comes on and it shuts down. the noise continues for about 15 to 30 seconds after the burners shut...

This sounds like a low water flow situation. The heater is telling you that the high limit sensor is curring heater operation. The noises are the heat exchangers boiling the water either due to a blockage in the exchanger , a bad mixing vlve, or most likely poor water flow. This is tough to troubleshoot through a posting like this, but 1st thing is 1st. Check your water flow and make sure it is minimum 50 Gallons per minute.

I HAVE A 50 GALLON 5YR OLD RICHMOND HOT WATER TANK SOMETIMES YOU TURN ON HOT WATER AND IT RUNS FINE.THEN ALLOF A SUDDEN THE WATER STOPS AND PIPES BANG.WE HAVE 44PSI COMING IN FROM CITY

What you're describing is "water hammer". This problem, left unchecked, can cause big problems for your home's plumbing. Water hammer is result of quickly shutting off the flow of water in your home. The faster the rate of water flowing when it is rapidly shut off can result in very loud banging. The banging is caused by the pipes shaking in the walls, ceilings and any place they aren't secured. This repeated shaking causes soldered and glued joints to weaken and eventually fail. The most common sources for water hammer are toilets and wash machines, but even quickly shutting off a faucet can cause it too.

An short article about water hammer is here. Below is a link to images of products designed to arrest water hammer and associated noise.

My gas pool heater is banging

Hayward, gas heater... a metal clinking noise and the hoses doing a twitch every 5 to 20 seconds. my experience says it is that diverter shield has come loose...disconnect everything. unscrew the in and outlet connections.look into the hole, you will likely see a metal, plate with two half circles, one facing the inlet hole, and if you go around to the other side you will see the other end of the plate, with a half circle. this plate comes loose, whatever they use doesn't last.
one guy used a small hose clamp to keep it from sliding up and down the post, I used that two part plumbers putty, to "weld" it in place....homedepot, comes in a small cylinder, it's two part, you cut off a piece and mold it in your hands, worktime is only 3 min. cures in an hour.... no more clinking metal or twitching hoses.

Banging noise when motor turns off

Have you replaced your air filter recently? Often this is a symptom of a restricted return. The blower almost causes a vacuum in the duct work, and when the system shuts down the duct "pop" back out, causing this banging noise. Hope this helps

High pressure, and heater noise

I am not sure if you have solved this issue, or not, but if the PSI on the gauge is high then the problem may not be the heater. When you have the system turned on, and the PSI is reading higher than normal, just the flow of water coming out your return lines. If the flow is normal, like when you clean your filter, then see if you have a way to re-route the water so it bypasses the heater. If the PSI on gauge drops, then the issue is in the heater.

If the flow of water is slower than normal, with the PSI reading high, then you have a blockage somewhere in the system. It could be something simple like removing debris from skimmer and pump backets, to time to backwash, or clean, the filter.

If the flow of water is really hard and fast, with the PSI high as well, then you have too much water going through the system and need to slow it down.
