Mrdieseldude covered most of the bases. Let me add that you can change brightness settings in the setup menu (consult your user's guide). It might be worth going in there to see what they are. When I got my radio there really wasn't that much difference between bright and dimmed. I bumped the bright setting up a notch, and backed the dim setting down to where it didn't keep me awake at night, and everything has been fine ever since. Be aware that when the lights go out, it takes a few second for the display to dim.
That doesn't make sense does it? A few things first.... how bright are the lights in the room? Is the display of the WAVE facing the lights? The radio has a photo sensor that detects light, but for it to be effective, it has to "see" the light. It could be that you have a bad photo sensor, but I would try a few things first. 1. Make sure the light in the room is sufficiently bright. 2. Make sure the display is pointed in the direction of the light. 3. Make sure nothing is covering the photo sensor (like a piece of tape or something.... maybe a previous owner wanted to "turn off" the light". 4. If none of the above get you going, shine a flashlight at the photo sensor (a bright one). This should turn on the display. If this works (and nothing else did), that just means you ain't getting enough light to the sensor under your normal conditions and you will need to correct that underlying problem first,
Good luck!
