Not sure what you are trying to open. There is a slide out catch tray for cleaning crumbs. There is no information in the booklet that suggests a need or a way to open the toaster.
Perhpas reviewing the booklet will answer your question.
mcdevito75 here, If the lever mechanism is worn it could give out at anytime, the sound you hear is like gears grinding, make sure the setting for Darker / Lighter toast is not set too low, set it for Darker toast and then see if it"s better.
That long rod and spring sound like the rod that the opperating lever rides on, kind of a guide, the spring is what pops it up when the toast is done .. should be sitting verticle in a groove or hole in the opperating lever.
It sounds like the heating sensor is longer functioning and the toaster is probably kaput, unless you can find an independent repairman who works on small appliances. In my own experience even a pricey toaster last about 3-5 years. I had the same problem with the same brand, just a different style
This is a problem, our old toaster had this problem, and it would only work if we jammed the handle down, but don't try this, only because ours broke after we tried this, but if you can send it to the manufacturure, they should be able to fix this. If you don't what to do this, please phone me at 505 9181, but please call me from 8:00-10:00, 2:30-8:00.
