Our Frigidaire side by side has an odor in the freezer making the ice smell. We cleaned everything in it and dumped the ice but you can still smell something on the ice.The unit is aprox 18 years old.
We were wondering if there Is a drip tray or a drain pipe that we need to check on. This problem just started this past weekend. Any suggestions would help.

the air blows from freezer to fridge side and then returns from fridge to freezer,so it could be and usually is something on fridge side causing odors or funny tasting ice cubes, check under bottom draws on fridge side, what kind of odor is it?
Pour about 1/2 cup of water into icemaker . If it dumps the cubes , then replace the water valve . If it doesn't , replace the icemaker . Also make sure the refrig coils are clean and free of dust , lint , pet hair , etc....
Hi: Dumping the ice is the start of the ice making timer. Before you replace the ice maker... Set the freezer one setting colder. The ice maker wont make ice if the freezer is not at zero degrees F. Just because things are frozen in it dosn't mean it is at zero. This happens a lot in the summertime. After resetting the temp don't open the door every hour to see if it makes ice as you will just dump the cold air out. Listen for the ice to dump, give it 24hrs. I hope this helps, Jeff
I'm sorry that I don't have a solution, but we have the exact same problem with an older model KitchenAid side-by-side. Did you get this problem solved? If so, can you share what you did?
There is drip tray underneath the unit. Depending on model, there are multiple ways to access. This tray needs cleaning regularly. Once clean, sprinkle in Baking Soda to keep odors down. Cleeaning this on a regular basis is the only way to beat this smell.
I had a side by side refrigerator with an Ice maker from Sears. The ice it makes smell fishy so bad that I could not use to drink with anything else but throw away to the plants. So I unscrewed the ice maker . It is not that bad, but quite simple to take it out. I noticed rusted pieces of metal generating strong fishy smell. I could not get rid of rust with soap, detergent, oil so I wrap it in plastic bag then screw it back into the refrigerator. Screwing back the ice maker. Voila. The smell is going away. The ice is good. Pina Colada and Daiquiri here we go .
I believe that you might have a coolant leak causing the chemical odor. You really should get it checked out by a fridge repair-person because it's not healthy to breathe in the fumes.
