well firstly if u wana recover ur data u have to make the external hdd power up but thats the major area of issue that its not powering up. the difference in plug doesnt make a difference cuz u can use the same plug, the voltage is same thorugh out in ur place from the substation. so it might be a possibility that when u connected ur hdd,the power ON/OFF switch was awredy ON IF hdd has one. so wat i feel is dat u can try opening the hdd and then connect the hdd to ur desktop with help of the BUS CABLE used to connect the HDDs in desktops. so in dat case i would suggest that u go through the manual of ur external hdd to see how to access the the casing in which the hdd is there.then if u happen to get thorugh n it turns on then u dont have to recover ur data. it would still be there. HOWEVER,its recommended that u dont try these things personaaly if u are'nt too tech savy. u shud consult a tech or a freind who knows abt this.

The beeping means that not enough power is being supplied to the device, and as a result, the disc will not spin up (not recognized). I suspect that the reason he was able to once make it work is perhaps he has more USB devices plugged in now...therefore, not enough power to go around. Or perhaps he has swapped cables?? I had this exact same issue when I bought a new cable for my Freeagent Go. I wanted a longer cable, but for whatever reason the cable itself didn't supply enough power; I got that ugly sounding beep (could have been a bad cable I suppose). When I plugged the drive in using my old cable, it worked flawlessly. I would first ask him if he has been plugging in more devices recently. Then I'd get a compatible USB cable that has an extra power connection (when he plugs it in, he'll have to plug into 2 USB ports).
Hope this helps.
