Most Pool Pumps use a 1/4" regular standard thread.
Thats pretty standard.
Now the filters from Hayward vary! They use a cap normally, and size is all over the board.

SOURCE: replaced sand now filter isnt working

if u used play sand, or any other type of sand thats NOT pool filter sand, that could be the problem. also if there is too much sand or too little sand that could also cause this.

SOURCE: The pump only hums when plugged in. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the impellor is locked. Take this part off and then see if the pump is turning but before you do, some of them have a big screw driver slot in the shaft. If it does, turn it to see if you can free the impellor. I have done this many times and they will continue to work for years after. They just get stuck from rust, etc. and also being frozen a little. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: pool pump is very loud

A loud pump is typically the bearings. You can get a bearing wheel for under $15 at your pool supply store. You should change the seals while you're at it- about $12. It's tricky to remove the impeller. Check Youtube for a nice "howto". You may also want to get a gear removal tool to remove the bearing wheel. Any auto parts store will carry it. To get to the bearing wheel you will need to remove the very long about 10 inch screws (4) from the rear housing. I used a 1 inch pipe to tap the bearing wheel. back on the shaft. Works great now.

SOURCE: how do i drain pool with hayward valve? setting is

you do need to set the filter valve to waste but you need to make sure the valve on the suction side of the pump is pulling water from the pool instead of the spa. Also, if you have a separate skimmer and main drain valve on the pool suction, make sure the skimmer valve is turned off. Otherwise, you will keep losing suction. If you don't have a separate skimmer and main drain valve, you may not be able to drain the pool with your equipment.

SOURCE: how do you change a pump seal on a hayward 1hp

The seal is located behind the impeller. Once you remove the impeller it is fairly obvious how to replace it. Basically, unscrew everything, replace it and put it back together again. There is a decent diagram on page 11 of the Hayward owners manual found here if you need it. http://www.haywardnet.com/products/Manuals/pdfs/Manual113.pdf

I have a hayward s166t filter, guage reads 0 and sight glass water does not swirl when backwashed

Does it show pressure when in "Filter" mode?

If not, then your pump is either not primed, Impeller is plugged, or there is not enough water in the pool, you are sucking air.

Hayward sand s166t. leaking from bottom

Are you sure it is leaking from a spot "Originating" at the bottom? Many times this is what is seen, but the water is actually traveling down the side.

If at the bottom, you either have a cracked tank, or the drain cap is loose, missing the cap gasket or it is on "Cross Threaded"?

But... most likely from experience, it leaking at the valve clamp.

When filter is set on

The valve on top of the filter has several settings. What is yours set on. If it is set on Backwash or Rinse or Waste, it will allow the pump to send water out the drain. If you have new sand, you probably should run on the Rinse setting for awhile, then switch to Filter.

I dont know which setting to put the filter on when i vacuum my pool...it is a s166t series...also i cannot get the pool to stay clear...any suggestions

You vacuum in the regular filter setting; as for clear water you'll need to look at your overall water chemistry and/or take a water sample to the location where you get your chemicals and see what they have to say about your alkalinity, chlorine, pH and other readings.
