Most likely it is a fault with the external monitor, either an inverter circuit board or the CCFL lamp. To confirm if the laptop video card is faulty, connect another external monotor to the laptop and if the monitor is OK then it confirms the Samsung monitor is faulty.
I had the same problem with this monitor (Samsung 943nw) When turned on it would only stay on for less then a full second. When shining a light on the screen I could see what was on it, so it was just the backlight that was shutting down.
After I turned down the brightness of the monitor, the next time I powered on the screen the backlight stayed lit and it was back to normal.
Could be a power issue. If it doesn't show anything at all then that may be the case. It may also be the display itself. It would be a costly repair so you might be better off finding a new monitor.
i think it can be the capacitor problem, open monitor an look for swollen capacitors. if you will find them swollen or

Beautiful screen, lasts about for a few minutes, goes black. Power button still green. If I turn it off, and then back on, it works again for a while. Any ideas?
If you have a second monitor, you could use your computer until the monitor goes black... then plug in a replacement monitor. My guess is that one will display black too...
My gut feeling is that your VGA card is on the fritz... I'm not convinced it's your monitor. Do you have a replacement VGA card you can try? I'll bet that'll take care of the problem.
I start my computer and turn it on, and everything looks fine for about 1/4 of a second and then it goes black while leaving the power light green. I can only see the screen again after turning it off and on, but that's only for another 1/4 second. What's up? I got my rosewill flatscreen as a hand me down from my father. I've had it for several years now. Was working fine until a month ago. When I turn the computer on the screen goes black after 1/4 of a saecond. I have to turn it off and on anywhere from 10 to 20 times before it stays on. I have checked all plugs to the computer and outlets. I have absolutely no idea whats causing this.
I don't have a solution but would like to compare information as i just started looking into this problem myself.
1. I bought my Samsung 940mw in March, 2006 but didn't start having problems with it until around April, 2007
2. I'll be using it as my pc monitor when the screen goes black and the power light stays solid green. The monitor doesn't respond to the remote control. Nor can i manually turn it off via power button BUT i can restore it by a) turning power off at the UPS outlet it's plugged into b) removing the monitor cable from PC port c) restoring power and waiting for the Samsung diagnostic message about no monitor detected then d) plugging the cable back in. My monitor image reappears.
3. fyi I only use the analog monitor input. Samsung also released a new driver which hasn't made a difference. Within just last couple months the monitor will sometimes just go black a coupla seconds and come back on without any intervention
