SOURCE: craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps

SOURCE: Craftsman 18.5 riding mower when I engage the

craftsman decks have a positive stop adjustment for the decks. A spring atached to the blade ingadgement arm pulls the tension pully into position if the cable is rusted inside the sleeve it wont put enough pull on the ingadgment pully and thus the blades dont spin full force the belts on the mowers have no adjustments only the pully . second thing is you may want to drop the deck and clean around that pully by scraping any rust off the surface under the pullys slide good luck

Sounds like the idler isn't releasing for some reason. Check that idler spring is in place and check that clutch cable as they tend to bind up as they get well used. Also the idler arm itself for binding.

Craftsman lt 1000

Sounds like you installed the blades backwards, so the blunt edge of the blades are hitting the tall grass. This would cause the engine to bog down and almost die.
When replacing blades, always note the direction of the cutting edge. If possible, take a digital photograph of the old blades so you can refer to the picture so you can be sure of the direction.
If you go to Sears.com and search your model number, you should be able to find an owners manual that tells you how to install the blades.

My Craftsman riding mower runs fine but when I try to cut thick or tall grass the blades slow down and stop cuting, I replaced the belt thinking the belt was worn only to find I still have the same...

well yep it is,,,look at the deck first to check its not tight to turn look for sezed up bearings,,,then check that the drive belt/s are tight and not flopy and slipping also it would be a good time to check the cutting blades they need to be sharp and not blunt or they strain the belts and start them slipping too also the engine wont like the extra load put on it

most likely the blades are still in the on position, but you have a seat switch, parking brake switch, and the blade switch, also the mow in reverse key switch. if mower dies once you let out the clutch in reverse with blades on and key wrong.
