I can not open my WD passport (1000 GB) external drive

You may first want to try disconnecting any other USB devices, to guarantee that the drive is the only power-drawing device. Drives typically need all 500 mA that a USB port normally provides.

Cables do wear out, especially those handled often. Mini-USB cables are pretty common and can easily be replaced.

reformat your external hd.

Assign a drive letter for the External drive.

• Right Click on My Computer
• Scroll to Manage
• Select Disk Management
• Locate the External drive in the lower bottom Right corner, Right Click, Select Assign Drive Letter. Ok/Close

Open up My Computer, and you should see your External drive with your new drive letter assigned to it.

Try other usb ports on your laptop. If this doesn't work, replace your usb cable.

go to WD site and get drivers for XP downlod and run that then try hopw fully it will work

Format with that utility.

You might just need to assign a drive letter to it. Although this is generally automatic, something may have happened to cause it to lose it's format or drive letter. Check out the below link. I am pretty confident this will fix your problem.

I suggest you use Windows explorer to move the files instead

First check if your WD is running (spinning), no matter if the blue light is on. Can you hear it close with your ear, or feel vibrations on your hand when it starts.

If it runs, then check/replace the USB cable you are using with another.
Check the Power supply if it gives necessary power.


If you are familliar with disassembling/assembling, then open and remove the HDD from the box and try to connect the disc directly to your PC (using another HDD Data/Power cables).

If it runs, and you can acces it, then something is wrong with the Box.

If it doesn't, then the HDD is broken or damaged.

Please note that if your device is under warranty, DO NOT open the box ! Contact your seller for service/replacement instructions.
