Smith Corona XD5600 printwheel types wrong letters?

Typed beautifully and then something happened with the margin while typing in memory mode so I adjusted the margin. Perhaps I hit something? I tried changing printwheels, everything clicks in place. I just purchased machine so I don't have another ribbon yet, they are on order. While typing all my forms 125 carbonless forms, I used memory and no correction tape. but I put one in to see if that would help. I'm lost but need my machine. It stars out with correct letters but once you keep typing maybe 10 characters later, it types what ever and then sometimes I noticed it looks like the strike bar is hitting because I tried to type without printwheel and the saw the image of what was made. The wheel spins beautifully when inserted and when the lid closes. Now this machine I was told was not used for 10 years, but its clean and pretty.

SOURCE: not typing correct letters

Send it back for repairs if under warranty. This is not an office machine it is designed for very light home use.

could be the ribbon is not lifting, do you see an image on the ribbon, also may be twisted inside the cartridge the shiny side has to be facing the keyboard.

I just ran across this one. The pitch selector on the L. side of the keyboard may be in the PS position or just gotten dirty, slide it up and down a few times leave it at 10 or 12 and try it.

The problem may be the ribbon or the media you are typing on. try typing on a mulit part form, if the copies are good then its the ribbon (OLD) or the paper (GLOSSY).

My Smith Corona SL500 will not type the correct letters. If I type a "J", I get a "?". What is wrong with it?

Most likely bad printwheel, spokes may be catching on the ribbon and not going to home position. Try a new wheel, and or make sure carrier is returning to home position every time. make with white out the top of the print wheel spoke at home position and make sure it always comes back to that spot when you turn machine on and off and on. This will tell you if the machine is starting in the same place every time.

My smith corona sl 570 is not printing the letters c,v, b and n in both lower case and upper case. how can i fix this?

You have a key board problem. It may just need disassembly and cleaning but more likely it needs a new contact velum.

My Smith corona typewriter types the wrong characters.

Check to see if you are in KBII or a language mode if not look for bent or broken spokes on the printwheel.

Not all of the letters will print lower case

Printwheel in wrong. release the printwheel, make sure the pin is aligned with the slot on the hub and snap it back in. The printwheel should spin, then home out to the left margin, then it should be ok. If not try it again.Check to make sure no pedals on the printwheel are bent.

How to change the pitch?

Here ya go...

Margins and Tabs
Margins and tabs for both Type Mode and Mem Mode are set in Type
Mode, but can be changed in Mem Mode when text is recalled for
editing. Margins and tabs are set using the typing scale which appears
on the display in Type Mode. A blinking cursor indicates the typing
position. The letter “L” indicates your left margin setting. The letter “R”
indicates your right margin setting.
NOTE: In Mem Mode, the margins and tabs used when the text
is created will be saved with the text and recalled with it,
even if they have been changed.
Margins
In Type Mode, to signal that you are near the right margin, the
typewriter will beep 5 spaces before the margin. In Mem Mode, the text
will wrap automatically when you print.
Margins are preset depending on the pitch setting, which is the number
of characters per inch. They are:
10 Pitch 12 Pitch 15 Pitch
(Pica) (Elite) (Micro)
Left Margin 12 14 18
Right Margin 72 86 108
New margin settings remain until changed again.
1. Move the Mode Selector to Type. A typing scale appears on
the display.
2. Move the cursor using the Spacebar or Back Space to the desired left
margin setting on the scale.
3. Press Margin.
4. Move the cursor using the Spacebar to the desired right margin
setting on the typing scale.
5. Press Code + Margin. A beep confirms each new margin setting.
6. You can change to Mem Mode, if desired.

Take care,

When I type some of the letters are appearing with double lines. what is wrong?

Hi;

If you are getting to small vertical lines instead of the character then the printwheel might be bad. All the spokes on the printwheel should be evenly spaced and not bent or deformed.
