A user, decided against our advice and created a 1.97 GB PST file and then was unable to open it. It is now damaged, using the scanpst.exe tool, it comes up with the error An error has occurred which caused the scan to be stopped. No changes have been made to the scanned file My question is, is there anything out there free that can fix damaged psts or is all hope lost?

Easy steps to solve corrupted .pst file...
1. Click the Start menu and in the search or Run dialog, Type
C: Program Files Microsoft OfficeOffice12SCANPST.EXE and Press Enter.
1a. Optional: You can also find this file by Clicking My Computer and browsing to the destination. Once there Double-Click SCANPST to open it.
2. Type in or Browse to the location of your Outlook PST Files.
Press Start to begin the repairing.
Note: Microsoft Outlook 2007 must not be running to complete this step.

First off that PST file is still under the size that is allowed. The problem could be that it was bigger than 2 Gb and it was truncated. The scan tool wont fix everything and MS admits that. The other tool that you can try is not available unless you contact MS support and those calls are not free. I would see if you can rename it and import it some cases allow this to happen and it takes care of the issue.
To restore a file .pst, follow these steps:
From the Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type:
Code: Select all
drive: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ System \ Mapi \ KodYazyka \ scanpst.exe
Click OK.
In the Enter the name of the file, enter the path and file name listed in the error message above.
Note. May not be able to use the Browse button to locate the file, t. To. It is located in a hidden folder.
To change the logging during the scan, click Options. If the switch is set to replace or supplement protocol protocol, the log file will be saved in the same folder as the file .pst.
Click the Start button.
When the scan is finished a file, select Create a backup copy of the file before restoring.
Click the Restore button.
If the file has been successfully restored, a message is displayed that the recovery is complete. If using a recovery program "Inbox" file is not recovered, you will need to use a backup file.
