Try cleaning the black printer heads several times in a row, at least 5 times then print a black document with best quality setting.
Press the ink button, then down to select select cleaning and then press menu/set and menu/set again to select black.

I've tried many kinds of cleaning and nothing helps save the old printhead. The only repair is to replace the printhead which costs around $100.00 for the part alone. It's not easy and should be done by a shop but a new machine would be less than the repair and you start again with a one year warranty.
Testimonial: "Thanks for the tip - I shall have another go with the cartridge first, otherwise I might take your advice and just buy another printer. Just my luck! "

This works on several different Brother Printers to get rid of toner/drum empty errors:
1. Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following
steps.
2. Turn the printer off.
3. Hold the 'go' button while
turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on.
4. Release the
'go' button.
5. Press the 'go' button 2 times.
6. Pause.
7.
Press the 'go' button 5 times.
8. The toner light should be off.
9.
The paper light should be on or flashing [doesn't happen on all].
10. Close cover. The ready
light should be the only light on.

Is the printer still asking for a new toner..?
If it is the there is a gear that can be reset on the toner cartridge to tell the machine its a new toner cartridge. This is normally done by an engineer, but is quite easy to do if you know how. And I do :0
