Old Sylvania Trusurround SRS TV 4 head VHS and DVD combo, shuts off seconds after being turned on. No picture, just a black screen for a few seconds then it turns off.
So I did figure out that it has something to do with the VHS...(this is edited). The VCR will accept the VHS, but the movie freezes then ejects. For now, I figured out that if I keep the VHS inside the VCR and press stop, I can view a DVD without any problems.

I was having the same issue. I found this on Fixya and it seems to have worked.
Okay I just called and found this out. I have the 32 inch vizio hd flat screen. My problem with weak and fluctuating volume, was that I have a cable box. Go into menu, then audio and under the advanced audio section you will see srs trusurround HD and srs trusurround. Basically this function automatically adjusts volume levels for satelites and whatnot. But because cable boxes automatically have this feature you could just turn off the srs trusurround. Hopefully that should help you.
Offhand it would appear that the VCR section of the combo unit would require a bit of cleaning. Specifically, head cleaning. The easiest approach is to use a VHS tape head cleaner.
The other post of "tv turns on then 5 seconds later shuts off" would be the auto-protect kicking in. This indicates that a likely hardware fault exists. Try to initially reset the unit by unplugging from the mains for an extended period. Otherwise it would require opening the unit for voltage measurement/diagnosis.
Pls post back updates. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
The vcr carriage was probably damaged ( broken gear or carriage gear, etc ), As for repairing it, it may not be worth it and chances are, you won't find a new carriage for the unit. I have, in the past, disarmed the VCR unit and at least the customer could watch the TV. Thats not possible in every set, but it seems to work in the majority of them. Good Luck

THERE IS A SENSOR SWITCH THAT TELLS THE MACHINE THE TAPE IS LOADED ... SOUNDS LIKE IT IS STUCK.
PROBLEM IS ACCESS WITH COMBO'S. THEY ARE A PAIN TO GET AT. THE WHOLE BACK COVER TO THE TV MOST OF THE TIME HAS TO BE REMOVED,...
I KNOW ITS NOT MUCH HELP BUT THE MANUFACTURES KNOW THAT... HOPE YOU CAN GET TO THE TRAY INSIDE.

Even if you do get it connected you cannot copy from vhs to dvd as you have bought a vcr recorder with dvd player, not a dvd recorder.
You can only record to the vcr tape from a dvd, in the players controls.
It sounds to me like you have a problem with the reel sensors not detecting movement of the tape through the VCR. This could also be caused by a defective voltage regulator(s) that powers the sensors. This model was made by symphonic/funai (1-800-242-7158), and it is not likely worth repairing.
