Most likely a defective power switch, this could be dangerous because it could be a fire hazard. If you need to use it be sure to unplug monitor anytime you leave your desk but the switch or other offending part should be replace or repaired as soon as possible.
When you connect an external monitor to your laptop, you have to switch the video signal from the laptop screen to the external monitor by holding down the blue lettered <FN> key and depressing the blue lettered Function (FN) key that has ( CRT/LCD ).
If your monitor doesn't turn on, and you are sure of the power supply (some plug directly into the wall and some use a power adapter), then you can assume that the monitor has failed. You can fix it (replace the power supply in the monitor itself or possibly the on/off switch), have it fixed by someone who knows how to do this, or buy a new monitor. First, of course, be sure the problem is your monitor and not the computer. If the monitor light turns green and then yellow, you can assume it's the computer. If the monitor light doesn't go on at all, it's the monitor.
mcdevito75 here, Press the SHIFT key, a screen should come up telling you too click on your user name, left lower side of screen. If this doesn"t work, press the yellow blinking light on the monitor see if picture comes back, then follow the directions. If this doesn"t work, shut computer down with switch on the computer itself. Hope this helps.
your monitor could possibly have a backlight problem.. the wires to the lights are known to come off the lights in the screen.. if you try to check it your self be careful the lcd screen and lights are very frigile, nad can brake easly..
Same here, your light went out if you put a VERY bright light on you'll be able to see something on the screen if you plug it up to your computer, if you are getting a new one go dell its worth it becase they last and are durable.
