You still need to determine if the main amp is at fault, before takling the turntable. Does the amp have seperate sockets for the turnatable, if yes then inside the amp it will have a pre-amp just for the the deck, which no other device will go through. This can be easily tested. First find it, by tracing the wires from the phono imput to the first PC Board you come to. This should have the pre-amp on it. Touching the left and right inputs (one at a time) to it should cause it to buzz. If they buzz at the same volume it's OK. If not there's a fault on it.
If that test is good then the turnatable is to blame, starting with the obvious fault of the cartridge. Other faults include broken or poor connections, plus a fault in a pre-amp on the turntable. You can test this by the same method as above.
