Any CD recorder should be operational without a remote BUT there may be some menu items that might not be accessible. It strikes me as a poor design when you are required to use a remote to operate a device for basic functions.
The manual states that 74 minute 650MB 1-4X disks run best; my machine would not burn anything I had, eventually I found 650MB crrw's on ebay for as cheap as 2 cents a piece, I have a fair number of them and so far every single one has worked. Imation 800Mb cd's seem to work 80% for me.
open it up and take the mechanism out, then you should see a servo PCB screwed to the underside of the mechanism. unscrew this and where the connecting wires plug in from the main PCB, you should see 2 or 3 fuses which look a bit like capacitors and should be red in colour marked MPXXX eg. MP100? replace these if you can find spares, if not bridge them with a bit of thin wire soldered in place and then it should switch on once reassembled. the clicking sound you mention will be the main power supply capacitors running and this is normal.
