This is usually caused by the heating circuit not heating the water. And most of the time, this is NOT caused by a bad heating element, but instead, by a bad controller. A solder connection to the heater relay has gone bad. You can see this easy enough if you take the control module apart. (Depending on the model, the controller is located EITHER in the door, or else on the bottom right-side of the DW.) It is possible to re-solder this connection and get your dishwasher working again, but this is only a temporary solution because the problem is actually in the relay - the contacts have gotten pitted, causing resistance which causes heat which travels down the leg of the relay, causing the solder to melt. The correct solution is to either replace that relay or the complete control module.
