i had the same problem and figured out a way ....
actually , there is the way of putting hard coded subtitles onto the movie , but i dont think that it is a good solution as of you need to reincode the movie.
my solution, the hebrew fonts are not available in this device , and probably wont be availabe any time soon. so you need to use dvd subtitles, in the format of .sub and .idx. the sub file is quite big - 1 to 5 mb depanding on how much text there is in the subtitle file u have.
these files you can make using subtilte creator for example.
you have to put it in the same dir and same name as the avi file, and to rename the srt file or delete it.
this solution is not funal because there is some kind of bug not shutting down the subtitles, for this i have written alittle prog to fix...
